hi

@kasperh
did you get your second imac to compare by now?
and if so, what's the conclusion?

i do have the same "problem" as you with the shadowy cloudy thing when sliding a white background around the display.
but it is really something you have to search for by doing the things above to find it. ^^

but who nows, i'am going to keep an eye on it whether it is going to bug me or not.

and about the black background thing, if i "do" a total black background in photoshop or pixelmator and go fullscreen, i do have a "whiteish / blueish" bleed on the bottom right of my screen.
at 50% brightness and normal ambient light, one can barely see the bleed.
on 100% brightness it is well visible but only on black color. any other colors, well let's say, you only see it when you now it's there.

ah well, to the point, did you get the chance to compare imacs?
if so, did your new imac do better? if it did, i might make that call to apple then..
if the "things" mentioned above are about the same, i think i'am not going to bother.. ;)

hi towje,

How much of the shadow cloudy thing do you have, is it one place or scattered around, or a few vertical or horisontal lines?

Mine is in 3-4 places, one place a vertical line about half a cm in width and 10cm in heigh, but ONLY visible when dragging the window around. the others are smaller spots.

Apple shipped my new iMac today, and it is supposed to land at my doorstep tuesday. I'll report back then as soon as i have it. I will be comparing them side by side and keep the best of them.

I'm really hysterical, and should probably just keep the one i have, since this is the only fault i can find, it's very silent, good temps, and no yellowing. But we will se, maybe the new one will be 100% perfect :)

Don't expect to find any differences in the blackness of the LCD. Thats an inherent limitation of IPS displays. Search for 'white glow' and you'll find several examples of the phenomena online.

hei kasper,

my cloudy thing sounds exactly like your cloudy thing .. ;D
scattered around, one big vertical and the rest are smaller clouds.
and they are too, only visible if you search for them, hard (dragging white window around).. ^^
so as cube mentioned, and i have read that a lot now, it's the type of display.

so i will go on and keep this one, because everything else is incredible perfect like no dead/stuck pixels, quite as s***, yaddayadda .. ;)

but nevertheless, post you're result after matching the two imacs pleease. :)

greetings,
towje

I agree that the backlight being white'ish and pretty bad in the corners of the screen... and nowhere near perfect black is probably something we will have to accept

But not so sure about the cloudy shadowing though. My Macbook pro and two older HP laptops have none of this. I know it's not dust on the inside of the glass, i've checked that. Maybe it's on the actual panel....which is a bit further inside the guts of the iMac than i'm comfortable exploring.

I haven't heard of anyone complaining about what we are experiencing....maybe it's silly, i just wasn't expecting an expensive machine like this to have such an imperfection.

I was hoping more people would "dare" test their screens, but at the same time i fully understand those that won't look for something they don't see in everyday use, and might end up getting obsessed with it.

well, i totally understand your point.
i do feel exactly the same.
in fact bevor my new imac i had to use a windows "barrel" pc ...
i had a 24" benq led monitor..
well to be clear, i am reeeeelly happy to got rid off the pc finally! ;)

but one thing pisses me off, well not that much to get angry, but still..
i tested that benq monitor too, just cause i was curious.
it's the white one btw, ah well, to the point..

when i do a black background in photoshop and go fullscreen...
MAN is THAT a black!!
i was really -> o_O
it's just like you turned it off.
and, come on, that thing costs only 200bucks .. o_O

ok i have to admit, the overall brightness is way behind the imac (but no "clouds" so far), but that black ... Oo

ah, ok i think you got my point.
i just was very confused about a 2000eur machine to loose on that part against a 200bucks monitor ..

ah well, who knows, maybe we are just to picky, kasper... ;)

I got my 3rd replacement iMac today, and it also has cloudy shadows in several places across the panel. It also has an awful yellow tint

Returning both, and getting my money back this time :(

Maybe i will go with a MBP 17" and a Dell monitor instead....haven't made up my mind yet.
