My new MacBook Pro (running 10.5.1) won't always let me use F8 F9 F10 to use the backlit keyboard. Is this normal? Or a bug? Or a warranty issue? Or a preference I need to change somewhere? Thanks!

backlit keyboard question

Does it show the keyboard light level popup, but with a crossed-out symbol below it? If so, then like gr8tfly said, probably just too much ambient light (isn't there a hack to override that?).
If nothing happens at all, or it shows the brightness gauge changing but the keyboard stays dark, then that's an actual issue.

yes it shows the crossed-out symbol. i guess you guys were right - it seems to be working now. but the room did seem fairly dark to me when it wasnt working. o well
is there a light sensor somewhere that you can just put a piece of tape over it? that way you can keep the backlight on.
