Hi all. Apologies if this has been covered off before (and I'm sure it has), but I was wondering whether it's straightforward to use Time Capsule to backup another external drive connected to my imac/the TC?

The idea would be to use the external to archive sensitive documents etc and keep these off the imac's internal drive altogether.

Thanks!

Connected to the Mac, yes.
Connected to the TC, no.

If you connect it to your Mac, you can go into Time Machine prefs and uncheck the external drive from the list of excluded drives/folders to be able to back it up to the TC (it's excluded by default).

If connected to the TC, the only things you can use it for are to share it on your network as a NAS, back up to it via Time Machine, or use it to archive your Time Capsule's hard disk.

Thanks for that. Bit of a shame - if someone's going to nick my imac, they're going to take the external too. At least with the TC it can be in a different room altogether.
