Not sure if this is the right board.. but if i backup my phone to iCloud prior to using iOS14 will my backup be available 2, 3, 4 weeks later or will the iOS14 automated backup effectively 'destroy' it..

I will install iTunes if required.. and switch to a more "controllable" backup, but just seeing what people think?

Ty! 😀

iCloud backup will overwrite your iOS 13 backup with no backup of that backup. Use iTunes or third party software to backup your device.

If you backup while on iOS 13 and then install iOS 14, your backup will be overwritten UNLESS you archive the backup. To do this, you need to do a connected (i.e., not wireless) backup. To do this, follow the instructions here: https://www.imore.com/how-make-archived-backup-your-iphone-or-ipad

If you disable iOS 14 iCloud backup, the last iOS 13 one should be available for some time.

thanks for confirming, i suspected as such - will make an archived local backup, ty!

Your Icloud back is not destroyed but Icloud chooses how long to keep multiple back ups. Doing a local back up in addition to Icloud is recommended but not required to downgrade. You can restore your device to IOS 13.6 and then restore it from prior IOS 13 Icloud back up.

Note that you can upgrade to release IOS 14 non beta without wiping your device but you have to make it about 2 months till it is released in September sometime. IOS can not downgrade to 13.6 without recovery mode and a computer attached.

I took IOS 14 Beta 2 Public for a spin on my Ipad 7 (2019 model that only had 32GB total and before upgrading it had around 13.5 GB Free] and iIOS14 beta 2 was good with one major caveat it ** ate space like hell**.

After the upgrade I was 10+ GB poorer down to 3 to 3.5GB free. I played with reboots and restarts, turned off share with apple and developers etc clawed my way to 6GB free. I deleted a bunch of large apps and got up 9 to 10GB free steady. After about 2 Weeks I put my Ipad into recovery mode connected it to my macbook pro and restored it to 13.6 and then Icloud restored my data and apps. I had not made a local back up. Naturally I was back to 13.5Gb free on non Beta regular 13.6. I could have also re-deleted the large applications and been about 18GB free.

It it is never good to run any device IOS or MAC with too little head room. I feel Apple should offer an aplet to analyze free space and let you know you might be too tight before proceeding. In short I would say while everyone's use of space on each of their IOS devices is different you would want to have at least 15-18GB free space or more. Even then you likely need to do what i did to free up space. Long story short IOS 14 eats an extra 10GB space over IOS 13.6 by default. Check your free space 1st.
