backup hard drive question

hey everyone! just a real quick question, i bought an external hard drive just to be safe to back everything up and i was curious, i have all of my school documents like word and power point in folders on my desktop, now does TM copy those files too when i connect my hard drive or just what is on my internal hard drive? If i have to drag these into the hard drive to make copies i'll do it i was just curious though. Thank you in advance!

It will copy the hard drive you select in the preferences menu. I think you only have one hard drive, so it will copy everything on that drive. There's a map, which really is your "desktop" map. (it shows it in my finder) so it will copy those ofcourse as well.

Your desktop is a subset of your internal hard drive.
