On my external hd, it says that there are 500gbs of backups for my 250gb mac book pro, I'm just wondering if this is normal and how to fix it if it isn't. More info about either product can be provided if needed. Please and thanks in advance.

Time Machine will fill up as much space as you give it with old backups. Your backups are behaving normally.
