My iphone is taking up too much space on my main drive when backing up. Is there anyway to backup to an external hard drive with iTunes ?

As far as I know, this is not possible since iPhone back-up files are sent to user Library. However, you can just manually move all the back-up files to an external drive, If a situation arises when you will need to restore from an iPhone back-up, just copy and paste the back-up folder back to Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

You can do it with iMazing. Very handy for moving large files between apps any your computer, I use it to install maps that I make myself into GPS apps. Also convenient for getting photos from my phone over wifi.
