Trying to backup my Macbook Air (Sequoia 15.01) to my external hard drive via Time Machine whilst on mains powr. Keeps coming up telling me there is a day to go, and it's using power like nobody's business (down from 96% to 77% in 10 minutes, despite being on mains). Is there a workaround or have I got a problem? TIA

Verify that the drive is working properly. From the app store, you can download Black Magic Disk Speed test to verify that you're getting USB 3 speeds to that drive.

Besides that... yes, sometimes Time Machine has problems and can't complete a backup and you need to begin all over again, maybe even a complete new Time Machine backup. But I haven't had these sorts of problems for a long time.
