Backup Questions

I have Time Machine for automatic backup on my MacPro. I just bought a portable hard drive and created a new vault so I can have a backup off site. Questions are: does this vault contain my entire Aperture image library, raw and edited version and all? Also, when I clicked update all vaults with the portable connected, it did not update the portable HD vault. Is there a better way to do this than with a vault? I just want to make sure I have an off site backup of all photo files, edited versions etc.
