Backup SHSH question

I bought a ATV2 and jailbreaked it.

I'm new to that and I read that I should backup my SHSH.

Can I do it after my jailbreak or I need to restore it to default to do it ?

And if I need to restore it, I suppose I will loose all my settings and custom apps like XBMC ?
