Backup strategy including 3TB Photos library

I was looking for advices regarding a backup strategy.

I am currently using external hard drives to backup the files with CCC. I have the main working hard drive that is backed up to 2 other hard drives.

My main question/issue is that my 3TB Photos (images and videos) library is on that main external hard drive. I work from it to edit the photos and videos.

I was thinking about moving everything to a Synology ds920+ with 12TB mirrored to a 12TB.

I wasn't sure if I would be able to edit on the fly (on the network).

Maybe I should leave that 3TB library alone and start a new library?

3TB Photo Library?????? OMFG!!! That's impressive... and scary at the same time. I've never had a problem with a photo library database, but I think you're just asking for potential catastrophic problems with a library that large. If I were you, I would split your photo/video library into multiple individual libraries based on some sort of category you decide is best for you.

You can do this manually (hold the Option key down while launching Photos app to create new libraries and/or choose which one you want to open. You can then move photos manually to individual libraries, but this can be tedious.

There is a better way, but it costs $30 – PowerPhotos (formerly iPhoto Library Manager) has been around a long time and works extremely well for managing your photo library, including exactly the situation I've described.

Thanks! I do have PowerPhotos that I used for duplicates (+very great support). Yeah 3TB pictures and videos of the family...

Do people usually split libraries by Year?

Just to come back on my issue regarding a main working drive and 2 other drives for 2 backups. I have a mbp with 2.0 USB, mbp with usb-c and imac with usb2.0 and thunderbold 1.

It is not convenient at all to use a usb drive with those 3 machines. That's why I was looking a nas solution but on the other hand, I don't like having this possibly exposed to the internet even if the settings would be turned off... who can rely on vendor softwares... any advice?
