I have the SS model, but I still think the ion-x glass makes more sense for runners etc. I'm in Israel right now - bright sun, and outside it can be tricky to see the sapphire screen. For at-a-glance Watch use, the sport model makes sense as it is.

I live in Seattle the rest of the time, so sapphire works great since it's overcast so much. :D

If you want the lighter weight of the Ion-X glass with the superior scratch resistance of the sapphire crystal, I'm afraid it's just not available (yet).

Is also spot on - Ion-X glass is more likely to survive a very hard knock.

The Apple Watch, as with all things in life, is about compromises. ;)

Uh, no? What about the guy several weeks back who posted a photo of his watch smacking something, I think a wall as he walked by it, and it chipped the corner.

If people want nice things, pay the money for them. Being cheap never pays off unless you're the coupon queen.

No-one has ever claimed that the Ion-X display is shatterproof. :p

There will always be examples like "what about the guy who...".

Apple sells the glass on the Apple Watch Sport as being "Light and tough" / "a lightweight aluminosilicate glass" - not on it being invulnerable.

I have the sport and hope they come out with a more sport version. I would pay more than what I paid for watch that I have now.

My screen is scratched, it's barely noticeable and I don't really care.

Using the screen while you're sweating is a nightmare. The comfort of the sport band kind of sucks when I'm running and logging a lot of minutes.

The built in apps suck.

I'm afraid you will only ever get what you pay for.

The differences between Ion-X glass and sapphire crystal were made clear - and discussed at great length here, there and everywhere else - long before pre-order day.

I think hes saying he understands that but hes saying sapphire makes more sense on an active watch than it does the other watches. I agree it makes more sense on the sport since you are likely to see more wear and tear on it if you truly are active.

It's going to be d e a d simple to order the sapphire screen as a replacement if you crack or scratch the Ion-X. Just not through apple.

That's an interesting idea. I haven't seen any watch tear down videos yet... is this even possible? That would be a worthy upgrade for folks who prefer the looks of the Sport.
