Could Otterbox turn a profit if they sold the Defender series for $29.95 vs. $49.95? I am sure they could but to what end? It might make you and some other other consumers feel better about life, but what else does it accomplish? It certainly doesn't help Otterbox grow and develop new products. QUOTE]

That is one of the questions I have with discounted name brand products. Will they have enough money to develop new products?

Factory

Is Otterbox closing their China factory and opening one in USA due to these problems? I think that would be awesome. Imagine, buying a product made in the USA............ If this is true, I may actually buy an Otterbox. Right now I hardly buy anything cause most crap is made in China. I save a lot of money, but am not acquiring nearly as much stuff. But less stuff is turning out to be better. Especially when I have to move for work. Speaking of which, how cool would it be to have a factory in the USA? You know, we could WORK!

As posted in another thread, my Magpul Field case was made here in the good ol' USA. If otterbox did shift overhere, I would expect prices to increase simply due to wages, taxes and retooling expenses. Not saying it wouldn't be worth it.

Bad news for OtterBox, yes; sad story, no. I think this is great news for consumers. Why people spend $25-30 on a piece of plastic that cost $0.05 to manufacture is beyond me. I mean, I'm guilty of it too (I've got about 10 iPhone 4 cases, of which I regularly use zero) but when you think about it, the markup is insane.

There is a lot more that goes into stuff then just the price of the plastic. machines have to be bought to produce the parts. People need to be paid for R/D. That stuff isn't cheap. So there might only be .05 worth of plastic, but what about the thousands of dollars spent behind the scenes? Sure they might be over priced, but it isn't like they are making 1000% profit on it either

This. Also, hope folks enjoy their warranty and customer service free knock-offs! :D

this is just karma for those companies who think they can overcharge consumers for products that cost pennies to make.

sad story no.

I purchased a Otterbox Commuter Livestrong case today and on the back of the box it reads "Assembled in USA".

Yes, the otterboxes were taken out of their bulk boxes from china and the cardboard boxes were assembled in the USA and the otterbox put in them.

I got a knockoff Defender in the mail yesterday. Ordered it via ebay for $25 shipped and got it and somethin about it just didn't feel right. Went to Walmart this AM and picked up a Defender for $40 and I could tell the difference right away.
That's some in-depth case review right there.
