According to John Gruber, Apple is having difficulties with the multi-coil design overheating.

He believes the Apple will either start over with an entirely new design or that Apple have dropped the wireless charging accessory entirely.

I’m honestly disappointed, I was looking forward to charging my iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods at the same time.

If true, this would be too funny. Maybe in the future, Apple will think twice about announcing products that aren't complete and only announce products they actually have ready to ship.

I’m actually glad it never got released. I would have definitely bought one for my 8+ if they had released after the announcement. But now that all the phones are exclusively FaceID, I realized a vertical charging stand is more practical for my bedside table. I bought a vertical one recently and I’m looking forward to seeing if the XS Max will unlock without having to lift my head off the pillow.

Haha. Just makes me laugh. They advertised the series 3 watch as being compatible with it, and now the series 3 is outdate$ and the next model is out. I didn’t plan on buying it anyways as the price was probably going to be ridiculous for it. My Samsung wireless charger works just fine. But hopefully this will teach them a lesson, like phonejunky said, and they won’t announce products until their ready to ship.

Sure.

Until Apple released the vertical cradle for AirPower which you would have then proceeded to buy. :p

Btw, you leave your phone on the charger in a horizontal orientation so you don’t have to lift your head off your pillow as the FaceID camera only works vertically with your face?

I really never understood the people actually wanting this thing.
Its white and stands out horribly in any room/table.
Its flat so you can't see it like on a charging stand

If it was black with a black cable it would be better. I dont see the point in using a flat pad to charge a phone or anything else. Charging stands are the best way imo to wirelessly charge. Just the size of it makes me cringe as to where I could put this thing and have it blend in your furniture.

I charge my phone horizontally and face down, now. It wouldn’t be a change at all.

My TV, stereo, and speakers stand out way more than a mat lying flat on my nightstand would.

those things are meant to stand out. a charging mat shouldn't

I don’t share your premise that something lying flat is going to stand out (to whom?) or that it would be an issue if it did. But you clearly feel strongly about this, so it makes sense you wouldn’t want such a thing.

And the Anker 6-port USB hub also “stands out” and could go in a drawer if I could get a reasonable mat for the phone and watch.

1 cable to charge 3 apple devices which would be placed anywhere on the mat and not perfectly on the coil

Thats why.

You could put a decorative cloth or such over the mat and it will still work while knocking out the whiteness.

There would even be a market for decorative sleeves to put on the thing.

Just takes a little imagination to get it how you want it.

Well with my 8+ on my Mophie charger I can unlock it with Touch ID without picking up the phone if I have to. I'm hoping the Max will unlock on my new vertical charger without having to pick up the phone. And yes, if Apple made some vertical AirPower cradle I would definitely buy it!:p

I bought a vertical wireless charger for my 8 Plus, then replaced it with a vertical wireless stand with watch and Airpod dock... a flat wireless charger? will not buy...The vertical stand is perfect.
The old vertical charger I replaced is now on my desk in the office, so easy to just drop it on and *still* be able to watch a video etc while it charges.

I liked Apple's idea, until I had a vertical version.. Apple can cancel theirs.
