    Hey all,

I have a 3 year old 24" iMac (see sig). I recently discovered the optical drive is not working any more. It won't accept any discs and just spits them out. Two questions:

-I assume the drive can be replaced somewhere like the Apple Store. Does anyone know about how much that would cost?

-Are there any alternatives to replacing the internal drive, like buying an external desktop optical drive? If so, what's a good one to get?

    Thanks for any info.

OWC has some nice options for you. They have external optical drives, or replacement internal ones too.

Thanks. Assume that I am an Apple noob when it comes to getting into these machines. Is changing out an internal drive easy with iMacs, or something better left to pros?

I went to Best Buy and picked up an external LG superdrive on sale.

Haven't ever had a problem with it, lot less flaky than the Apple drives.

Apple finally replaced my Superdrive, though I still prefer using the external since it is a lot less prone to rejecting media.

Thanks, Sun Baked. I'll give that a try.
