Lots of crashes and freezing...have (2) 4GB sticks...pulled the lower one out and all working fine. Stuck the good ram in the suspected lower slot and crashed...question will a 8GB stick work ok in the upper (good) ram slot?

Thanks!

"Would this fix be a good long term solution (like work for 1-2 years?)"

It's the only simple, feasible "solution" that works.
(other than replacing the logic board)

Yeah, should be fine. You can always replace the Logic Board later if you really need 16G, but at that point you might as well buy a new(er) MacBook Pro.
