Long story short, I have just joined the world of apple with an iphone 4s, after reading a hell of a lot of reviews.

All of them comment on the great viewing angles.

However mine are awful, and yes I know no one uses their phone normally at extreme angles, but I notice it only slightly moving the phone.

I wouldn't expect them to be perfect at extreme angles but chaning after only slightly tilting is not right in my opinion and is certainly not great.

For example on a white page looking at it straight on if I tilt phone slightly whether it be right, left, top or bottom the white discolours and goes brown/darker.

Can anyone confirm whether this is normal and I was just expecting too much, can someone possibly try looking straight on at a white screen and tilting phone to see if the white goes "off-white", it will greatly help my ocd lol

Thanks

well no offence by my comments but here we go..

1. why are you trying to view your phone at a funny angle? are you not suppose to look at it head on?

2. have you had your eyes tested - could have some eye colour issues

3. and of course when tilting the phone its going to go off colour.. :S

I'm not looking at the phone at extreme angles as firstly I wouldn't expect it to stay the same as looking at straight on and looking at the phone from an extreme angle makes no sense.

My issue is that when tilted slightly and I mean slightly the screen colours paticularly in safari (white background) discolours/goes off.

I'm not a robot and my hand doesn't stay perfectly still, as I said it's only a very slight movement, that to me isn't a "great viewing angle".

Truth be told I don't care if a phone can't be seen from 180 degrees as I won't be using my phone at 180 degrees :D

But discolouring etc with a slight change is worrying.

If it's normal then I guess I'll have to deal with it, if it's not then I'd like to exchange it as I paid a lot for it as it was a sim free 64gb model.

By the way I don't agree with your third point, a screen that is classed as having great viewing angles shouldn't go off colour when being slightly moved, as I said I'd expect it at very extreme angles, or slight angles on a tn panel.

ah ok no offence intended... if i was you compare it to another one either instore or with a friend, and then you will be able to tell, i slightly tilted mine to the right and it seems to go darker but i expected that..

Good idea, I was planning on comparing other phones at my local apple store (without others seeing me as they'll think what the hell is that guy doing tilting phones lol)

I guess I posted on here just to get a rough idea from other people.

Apart from that loving the phone, I came over from android, and I am pleasantly surprised :)

Mine looks fine. There is just slight change in color but that is too be expected I guess. That happens with I look at the screen from almost at the side, not just a slight tilt.

When tilted to the left my screen goes blue and when I do it to the right it goes yellow.

I hardly notice any color change when i tilt my 4S slightly, but if you tilt it too much it gets a little more grayish, still looks good to look at though and you can even see what colors is what on the screen at an extreme angle on mine..

This is my experience too.

To the OP I don't think you should expect Plasma like viewing angles but better than the current iPod Touch, which uses a TFT rather than an IPS display.

You shouldn't be seeing color changes. You may see a dimming or darkening of the screen, but that's due to the increased thickness of the glass as the phone is turned (light travels in a straight line - when the phone is perpendicular, the glass is thinnest, when the phone is oblique, the glass gets progressively thicker). If the colors are changing blue and yellow when turning the phone, there appears to be a problem. Those are the classic indicators of a non-IPS display, which is impossible with a 4S. Do you have a screen protector on your phone?

Are you sure about that? My iPhone 4S screen exhibits the following (see link) & I was being bashed for even questioning whether my iPhone screen is "normal" & that I'm just plain picky. :(
