And I doubt that the designer simply opened a word processor and enlarged the font.

And that's where you'd be wrong as the Mac OS X 'X' is actually just an uppercase X in Myriad Pro Semibold. Trust me, I've used that to replicate (read: kill) the design in question.

Why draw out an 'X' from scratch when you can just use a character?
 
I hope they fix this now, it's rather offputting whenever I see it in town or online.
 
There's nothing wrong with it at all. Having designed and worked with type for many years, there's a big difference between an 'X' and two crossed straight strokes. End of story.

Those who think it somehow looks wrong don't know what they're looking at.
