And I doubt that the designer simply opened a word processor and enlarged the font.

And that's where you'd be wrong as the Mac OS X 'X' is actually just an uppercase X in Myriad Pro Semibold. Trust me, I've used that to replicate (read: kill) the design in question.

Why draw out an 'X' from scratch when you can just use a character?

Using my awesome photoshop skills I have attempted to show you where the curve should go if it were done properly.

If you change the shape and position of the oval, it'll match just fine.

There's nothing wrong with it at all. Having designed and worked with type for many years, there's a big difference between an 'X' and two crossed straight strokes. End of story.
