Home and mobile video game publisher Bandai Namco today launched an iOS version of the popular console game Pac-Man Championship Edition DX. The game is a modern update to the classic Pac-Man series -- requiring users to hunt ghosts, eat pellets, and earn high scores -- that presents players with a far faster-paced and more frenetic experience.

The app is promised to be a "premium version" of the original game and includes five separate game modes, ten unique zone layouts, and 132 total unique stages. The game itself is a follow-up to the original Pac-Man Championship Edition, which also saw a release on iOS following an original debut on game consoles.
Today BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. released a premium version of the award-winning PAC-MAN Championship Edition(TM) DX on the Apple App Store for iOS powered mobile devices and on Google Play(TM) for Android powered smartphones and tablets. PAC-MAN Championship Edition(TM) DX is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed titles in the classic maze-running action series with IGN.com giving the console version of the game a 10/10 along with an Editor's Choice award.

Its mobile debut features frantically addicting gameplay that can be enjoyed in short bursts for a thrilling and authentic arcade experience on the move. PAC-MAN Championship Edition(TM) DX comes alive with the same electric visual and sound design introduced in the console editions of the game.
The game's official release today comes after a soft-launch back in September, where the franchise was tweaked as a free-to-play experience and only open to players in New Zealand. The game was revamped with an overworld map, level-specific goals, and a coin system that made it easier to bypass some of the app's trickier challenges. Today's release of the game does away with every free-to-play feature and restores it to the classic console experience, albeit on a mobile-friendly level.

A page I'd like to see Nintendo take from Namco's book. It'd be amazing to buy a $10+ app and then buy GameBoy ROMs in customizable packs of, like, fifteen for 99¢.
It's not going to happen but we can all dream. I doubt they'd sell them for a dollar a piece much less fifteen of them if it did happen

Bandai-Namco? They just need to release a really great mobile version of Tekken for iOS. Could care less about Pac-Man.
I have tekken running on a raspberry pi. It sure took me back to the good ole days.
I would buy tekken just to support the brand. Gotta be able to go head to head though.

I doubt we'll see it while Nintendo is still making their own hardware. Once they go the way of Sega, they'll come around.

Nintendo sells a handheld for $200 and those same GameBoy ROMs for $5+ per game. This will never happen, sorry.

Fair point. Perhaps an expensive Nintendo-aproved emulator with ROMs available for $5+ would be more realistic.

Yes of course it's gotta have challenge mode, maybe via BlueTooth if your opponent is right next to you. Wifi/Gamecenter challenge could also work, but I'm not so sure that it will be as instantaneous and "real-time" as BlueTooth. Tekken is a twitch fighting game…. there is no room for lag.

Got this on Steam. It's pretty good! Would love a Vita version, all that black and neon would look amazing on an OLED display.

I doubt we'll see it while Nintendo is still making their own hardware. Once they go the way of Sega, they'll come around.
And, obviously, once they stop making their vast profits. The Wii aside, Nintendo's strongest market is handhelds. They won't let that go so easily.

Since the surge in mobile-phone gaming Nintendo has released their 2 most successful handheld consoles. To me it seems like people are prepared to pay a premium for good hardware and good content. I don't see Nintendo doing a "Sega" any time soon. Do you?

I would hope so. Pac-Man is twitch game and requires fast reflexes, makes it very hard to play on a "touch-screen joystick".

Heh, yeah.

I've played a few modes now. I've never actually played this DX version, it's pretty polished. My problem is that not even the "Expert" mode challenges me. I'm so used to getting eaten by ghosts in the original too. On this version, you can have 20 ghosts in a line going after you, eat the little thing that makes them edible, and they don't run away and just let you chomp them up.

Hahaha….. 20 ghosts lined up chasing you? Crazy! And THAT reminds me of a recent Apple fanboy t-shirt that I purchased online a few months ago (a Bday present to myself heheh)….. cuz like… Apple fanboyism.

Original tee can be bought from The Duck Company website, but copycats are also circulating on eBay. Anyone who ever bought a Duck Co. shirt knows what I'm talking about…. quality cotton tees, awesome designs.
