Wells Fargo has the mobile deposit option- for customers in Arizona ONLY! I'm surprised we actually got something first.

I also just tried it today with a check on BofA, works great.

They've had this in the iPad app for a few weeks. iPhone version updated today. No idea why it's not a Universal app...

Works well. I've deposited about a half-dozen checks using the iPad app. Cash available on the same schedule as a check deposit at an ATM (next day if during the week, else Tuesday).

They say to hold onto the check for 14 days should it be needed, then to destroy.

Super-convenient as don't live very close to an ATM.

Too little, too late as far as I go.

Bad business practices, plus a $12 monthly maintenance fee for keeping my account open broke this camel's back.

Moved my accounts to my local credit union, which their app has had this for at least 2 years. Haven't looked back, and this is from someone who was with BofA for 14 years.

BL.

I updated the app and tried it, it didn't work, said the image wasn't good enough, after a few tries it said mobile services temporary unavailable, failure

SF Bay Area was also added in the last few weeks.

iPad version added check deposit feature 2 weeks ago.

Another note worthy feature is "Transfer Now to Another Person", which lets you transfer money via phone number or email address.

Finally!

I still get checks from my clients and this change to the app is appreciated. I just tried it for the first time with two checks and then looked online to verify that records of the deposits were there; yep, it's all good. :D

Wonder why they have a limit of 5k though...

I'd guess it's some type of insurance or fraud deterrent, could even be a federal/state law perhaps... I think like Washington you can't even do online banking or it's limited... not sure i just remember seeing something in small print once along those lines.

Sweet, I can't wait to try it out.

This is probably a silly question, but for those who have already been using this feature with their bank, what do you do with the paper check after you take the pic. Is there some kind of general rule as to how long you should hold onto it in case there are errors with the system or something like that?

We used the iPad app from Bank of America to deposit a week or so ago and it pops up a message that says something like "Keep the check for 14 days, then destroy it." but the deposit goes through almost immediately. I think his funds, my son who has the most basic account possible, were in the next day and we deposited it at night.

I have heard Chase sends you an email when the clearing occurs so you can destroy but we haven't gotten an email from the Bank of America like that yet, so I guess we wait it out. That would be a nice feature to have so you know it's ok to destroy the check vs. waiting the 14 days. All in all, either way is better than having to trudge to the Bank to deposit the check Grandma sends, or the odd refund/rebate check.

There are enough banks that already have this feature - USAA, Chase, Citi etc - that it's more a case of banks that don't have it being unforgivably behind the times, especially since they are all shutting branches. I'm leaving HSBC specifically because they don't have this feature (and it gives me a warm feeling that I'm ditching what turns out to have been the official bank of the Mexican drug cartels).

My mortgage company charges a surcharge to use a CC or Debit Card. Ill continue to use checks as long as they are fre.

Why not use BillPay feature? I use it for my House and Auto Loan payments and CC payments and Utilities.

I only use ATMs for Cash Withdrawals. If they are going to remove 1500 odd of them, what do we do then?

The sheer ignorance in this thread regarding the use of checks is utterly astounding.

I can't even begin to imagine the self important hovel that some you must live in.

The question was meant more towards the average consumer rather than the business. I've written 2 checks in the past 5 years and rarely if ever see people use them.
A silly argument really, but just to keep it going. I put a check in my Church envelope every week.

Please don't delude yourself into believing that any U.S. bank is totally uninvolved in criminal activity. Such is pure fantasy.

$5000/month limit?!?! Glad I still have my USAA with $10,000/Day

And yes, I do deposit paychecks this way since I work for a small company and it is therefore cheaper than direct deposit for the company.

I use USAA which has had this ability for a while. One of the many reasons I say bye bye to B of A.

Yup.

USAA has had this feature for over two years now and their limit is 10k daily. And the funds are INSTANTLY available.

It was enough to finally make me say buh-bye and dump BoA as my primary. One of the worst companies ever...constantly attempting shady business practices, I was sick of them.

Those hoping their bank does it, don't worry, this is a requirement of legislation post 9/11. On 9/11 and in the days after, planes were grounded so checks couldn't be flown across country to be deposited. Because of this legislation was introduced to require them to accept electronic deposits of checks. While they aren't required to offer this quite yet (believe they have until 2014 to comply), many banks are already doing so.

While they aren't required to allow people to deposit with their phone app, just be able to transfer to other banks via electronic image, most will be accepting image deposits from their customers too. I know some already accept them at their ATM machines too.

Side note: Some might not be aware but the PayPal app allows you to do this. So you could simply deposit to your PayPal account and then transfer to your checking account with your bank. It will take a couple extra days but it is free and is an option available to anyone with a bank account and PayPal right now.

Good for BofA customers.

I, too, have been using the Chase App to deposit random checks I get for about 2 years now.

Love it. It's very fast and easy. I've never had one problem.

Seriously Bank of America. They finally have incorporated this into the app. Yeah, I rarely get a check. But I still do, maybe something like 6 times a year. It's a big pain to having to go to the bank for depositing checks.

Worked - But took several attempts;

FYI

I tried this ~ 5 or 6 times; first attempts may not have had all 4 corners in outline completely - did fix this on next two attempts with white paper background - still did not work; then changed to black background and worked. So little bit of a learning curve.
