Not surprised. This foldable OLED tech is expensive but it will get cheaper in time like everything. I honestly don’t some the practical use but people will definitely welcome the novelty.

Because Apple consumers obviously like it.

It’s like saying a swimming pool is just a large bath tub. Yes, they’re both just containers full of water. Used in completely different ways, entirely due to scale.

That’s my favorite analogy against hard headed opinions such as yours. If you think a cramped sub-5” display offers the same experience as a 10-13” display, then go ahead and keep thinking that. And if you think PC software is the only way to justify 10-13” software, that’s fine by me. I’ll continue to use and enjoy my iPad more than I’ve ever enjoyed my Mac, while you keep your head in the sand.

That's a terrible analogy, LOL.

Bluetooth changes this..

Why hold phone of any size up to your ear today, when we have bluetooth which will sort this out.

That was a side path I chose not to pursue. Yes, headsets, glasses, and other wearables can reduce/eliminate the need to hold a phone to the ear, but they're still user choices. I prefer to not go through my day wearing an earpiece - I don't get many phone calls, and I don't like to listen to music while I work. Further, due to privacy concerns, speakerphone calls - whether on the iPhone or Watch - are not always the best way to go.

In theory, there's nothing to prevent either an iPad or Mac from including a full cellular radio, yet they don't. Does it have something to do with Apple's market research results? Do people still need a phone to be a "phone," rather than have phone calling as a feature of a dissimilar device?

Despite the fact that I can (and do) use my Mac and iPad to answer and place calls (iPhone Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices) and I frequently use that capability on my Mac - I can't recall a situation when I chose to use my iPad to do that or initiate/respond to a FaceTime call. No doubt it's a personal idiosyncrasy.

If Apple eliminated this particular aspect of the traditional telephone form factor... All the debates over eliminating the headphone jack, switching to Lightning connector, replacing USB-A with USB-C ports, Face ID replacing Touch ID, etc. would seem like minor ripples in the pond.

To be launched in 2020 is overly optimistic. How many materials out there that can bend and flex while being durable without seeing any crease at the bend? If and when it does come out, I think I would choose large and flat as oppose to a folding one that would be small and thick.

Ha Ha at first I thought this said Apple plans to release an affordable iPhone. LOL yeah I was like WHAT!

I love how these suppliers blab about possible upcoming products. You can bet that the Android manufacturers read this report and are having meetings this morning.
This is cringing , the same OEMs that have been discussing folding screens for the last 2 years. Difference is, LG and Samsung can actually try and make this sh#t, Apple have to go cap in hand to a player with some scraps of paper and ask them to make them for them..

My experiences with flip phones were some of the worst I've had with cell phones, so a foldable iPhone is not something I'd want or need. If others want this, enjoy it. I am fine with a not quite brick.

Samsung has been working on a collapsible device for some time now, and many rumors suggest it could be presented to the public this year.
If by 2020 we could be have a iPhone with a foldable screen. That is to say 2 years after the Galaxy X? Where is the novelty? It'd better make a roll-up phone rather than foldable.
