I have a quick question for everyone. I was planning on a mini or studio but recent rumors are wild between price hikes, when they will drop, and ram constraints.

If I purchased the base MP M5 Pro, what’s the life span I could potentially get out of it?

I video edit in premiere and sometimes after effects. Will the base model handle after effects especially? I don’t usually do anything crazy with it.

The M5 Pro (15-core) is probably more than enough for your workflow (I'd load up on memory) for years to come. How long do you normally keep your computers for? People here have M1 computers that are still doing the job 5+ years later. Also, if I were in your shoes, I'd still wait it out to see if Apple announces new mini/studio models at WWDC +/- a few weeks. If they do, you can then do the math to see what's best for you. If they don't announce any new models by end of June, get yourself an M5 Pro MBP. It's unlikely the price of the MBP will change between now and end of June (disclaimer: but if it does, I'm not on the hook to cover the price difference lol).

lol I wouldn’t blame you. But yeah I buy and sell all the time. Kind of wanted a desktop and just use it for 5 years. That’s why I was eyeing the base studio but dang AI. I’ll have to wait until June 8th. If they don’t drop I’ll just settle for the MP

Has anybody used the base model with after effects?
Adobe says any M-series Mac with 16 GB RAM can run After Effects. So if you get a machine with 24 or 32GB of RAM, it should last five years. It’s difficult to predict beyond that.

For AE specifically — the chip core count on the base M5 Pro isn't the bottleneck, RAM is. AE's multiframe rendering eats memory fast, and once you start stacking effects on multiple comp layers the 24GB baseline fills up quicker than you'd expect. For basic cuts, color, and straightforward motion graphics at 1080 or 4K, 24GB is comfortable. If you ever get into heavy 3D compositing, complex particle stuff, or deep effect stacks, you'll feel the ceiling and wish you'd gone to 36GB.
The base chip is more than fast enough for what you're describing — I'd skip the CPU upgrade and put that budget into RAM instead.
