Base Model Geekbench

The base model might actually be the one to get, since you can plop in the 12 core cpu yourself and save a little money.

Presuming you don't brick the whole thing 😱

Oh really? The going price for a 4,1/5,1 right now is about $2500, plus your CPU upgrade, so that would mean the base model cost $5k? 🙄

My exaggeration on top of yours aside...

IF someone can find a great deal on a 5,1, that should be a consideration, but those deals seem to have dried up.. (I missed the big sale at Frys....)

if you look at the list of avail intel cpu.. the 12 core is the slowest in clock speed. Unless your application will be using full 12 core, I don't really thinking going 12 core will be any faster.

instead I'm more interested in this;

Xeon E5-2667 v2 8 / 16 3.3 GHz 4 GHz 25 MB 2 130W HT, TBT

I doubt that would happen, but it will get incredibly noisy and eventually throttle the CPU. So similar geekbench scores is not equal to a similar actual computer experience. Any chance to run some GPU benchmarks I'm curious about the d300 vs d500 performance difference.

the MBP gets hot enough for the Gpu to malfunction. I'll try and run a benchmark later

That is a great price on that rig, as that page shows, the average price is usually closer to 1200.. however, the video card in that system is crap, and it's low on ram, so you would have to add at least $500 more to get the performance of the base nMP, unless of course, all you run is Geekbench.

But, that is a good price on a 4,1. If that was local on Craiglist, I might buy it..

/edit I'm really happy for you that you like your new machine (eventhough it'll be outperformed by the next MBP) but you really sound stupid hating on people who critizise the new machine.

Also you most likely won't upgrade anything except CPU (be careful though) and RAM. HDD and graphics are proprietary and there won't be Macvidcards to the rescue this time around. So really, your machine will be outperformed by a notebook soon and there's little you can do.

It's an old machine plain and simple. Not only no thunderbolt, the usb3 does not function well (no tethered shooting). The nMp fills my needs because it is a new machine with updated hardware and software. I have a 1,1 (with sata) that will make a good file server

Oh, must have missed that TB is the new standard. Well for the moment it looks like it'll go the way of firewire. Well supported by Apple but not even close to a standard. Also gone in 6 years or so.

I didn't realize so many of you were buying machines for Geekbench scores…silly me!

Is there a rule here or something that people have to be rude to anybody happy with their purchase? Let the guy enjoy his machine…he's happy with it apparently.

People make too much of Geekbench scores. CPU isn't everything anymore. If your Mac Pro 5,1 has a similar Geekbench score or better…lets not forget it likely doesn't get 800mb/s+ internal storage, or Thunderbolt2 ports in massive quantity, or the workstation GPU's. Who in the world cares if a laptop gets a similar score? Does that make them equals? Hardly. Lets exercise some restraint and common sense. There's no need for a "mine's bigger then yours" thread.

The new base model Mac Pro is a fine machine...

you're confusing "standard" with "popular."
 
I'm not sure why folks bring up the iMac as a point of argument against the base Mac Pro? It looks to have similar CPU performance, has more outputs, and can be upgraded with GPU performance the iMac could never have. Even at the base of Dual D300's you have identical VRAM to the maxed out iMac but with 2 matching workstation GPU's instead of a mobile one.

If someone loves the new iMac's performance but doesn't want to get stuck with the all-in-one form factor or wants to use a monitor of their choosing the nMP base model is right up your alley…without spending much more money either. You basically get a headless iMac with greater GPU possibilities for a similar price. I don't get the fuss?

I'm really learning geekbench is irrelevant. On paper my 1,1 would be on par with the nMp, but it WHOMPS it in practice

My 3,1 gets 1558 single CPU and 10,781 for 8 cpu's in geek bench 3 32bit. This base nMac pro gets 3188/12849. How would your 1,1 compare exactly?

the day will come where you see your iphone geekbench around the same as all the mac...

but it mean nothing... it just a score... move on...

geekbench only talk about CPU only.. and people forgot computer is make up of other parts other then CPU..

the nMP SSD speed alone already throw every SSD in the market out of the windows...

dude, i can read AND count. My 1,1 was somewhere around 11,000 after the upgrades

LOL well yea if you upgraded it obviously. But when you say 1,1 and that's it…of course I'm going to assume it's one of the standard setups. You lose the value of saying it's a 1,1 if it's not really the original 1,1. What did you upgrade it to?

5365 i think, ram, ssd, 4890 radeon.

There was something not right in there, ssd kept failing because of the trim - and a video card issue where it would not start up. It is a file server now, served me well since 2006, but thank god for the new machine
