I realize there's new iMac's coming on the 30th of October but I wanted to check that it is possible to upgrade the base spec iMac to 64GB of RAM? As the option to spec it on Apple's website only goes up to 32GB, I'm assuming though that there should be no issues in manually upgrading to 64GB?

Looking to purchase around 16 machines, so small costs do add up. Will of course be spec'ing them with SSD's. Base CPU will be enough but large amounts of system memory are paramount.

    Not a given but possible.

Which base model are you asking about?

The 21" iMac has only 2 RAM slots, comes with 8G upgradable to 16G per Apple (non-Retina) or 32G Retina. OWC says you can install 32G in all of them but you have to pop the screen (and void the warranty) to do so.

The Standard 27" can handle 64G and it's a DIY.

Sorry I should've mentioned, it would be the 27" Retina iMac.
That's fine, I was more concerned they were using a different motherboard with only 2 slots.
$1400 for 64GB of RAM is absolutely obscene.

Even if they don't update them we will likely go ahead and buy them around early December as it's the only time of year we can replace systems (which need to be upgraded).

BH have kits at $548 which is a good bit cheaper than OWC.

There are Crucial and Kingston dealers in Los Angeles that have the really good price on RAM. If buying for 16 Macs, it pays to shop around.

The link to OWC was info only.

I appreciate it. Yes I'll definitely shop around when it comes time to buy.

The 27” can even take 128 GB unofficially. OWC tested this.

Nice, 64GB will be fine for the usage scenario.
