Looking for a new computer that will primarily be used for distance learning schoolwork (Zoom app, Google Classroom, Youtube, word, safari w/like 10 open tabs; so no heavy gaming or photo/design use). We already have a 27" LG 4k USB-C capable monitor at home so that is plus.

I am considering the following two options:

1.- Refurb Mac Mini i5 8gb 256gb from the apple store ~ $759.00
2.- Basic 2020 13" Macbook Air i3 8gb 256gb from Costco with citi card for extra warranty ~ 950.00

Do you see any performance issues with the MBA connected to an external monitor with this type of use?
I would appreciate your thoughts on which setup do you consider the best choice?

I'd get the Mac Mini. It has a much faster CPU, roughly twice as fast in multi-tasking/threading. You can also upgrade the RAM when 8GB is no longer sufficient. As I've seen browser tabs using 500MB to 1GB memory each. It's not too far of a stretch that 8GB can be a real hindrance in a couple years. Once you factor in the other apps you have running, OS needs and a few sync services.

Unless you have-to-have portability, the Mini is a great choice.

However, I'd suggest 16gb of RAM "from the factory". With 8gb you only get 6.5gb that is actually used by the OS for apps -- because 1.5gb is "roped off" for the graphics.

With 16gb, there's much more "breathing room" for everything.

Be sure to pick a good display for it as well.

In for mini too. The laptops are only worth considering if you need to move it around alot and take it places.
Technically, the mini could do that to some extent
