On Windows, I used an app called "Advanced Renamer" which could programatically create new folders based on a substring of the files name, then migrate the files into the folder. (This way I could rapidly group camera files that had a session prefix in the filename, with the prefix forming the basis of the new folders.)

Anything similar for the Mac?

Not positive but perhaps Hazel will do this. Not something I do but I read Paperless by David Sparks and he does this sort of thing a lot and highly recommends Hazel for this. Hazel is often recommended by sites that discuss this topic.

Apparently this is similar to File Juggler for Windows with which you may be familiar.
