When you are going through the drain portion of calibration does the laptop need to stay on the entire time or can you open/close the lid until the battery is fully zapped?
 
You can close the laptop (letting it sleep) during the discharge. But don't forget to let it sit for five hours after the sleep light went dark.
Btw, normally only 1% battery capacity is consumed per one hour of sleep.

Sorry for stealing your thread but...

I have my MBP connected to an external monitor so I never really use it unplugged. Is that bad? Having the AC adapter plugged in 24/7? Any recommendations?

No, unless you never calibrate.
