i'm new to mbp. What does a battery cycle equal/mean?. Does that mean when it needs a full charge?

No.

It means a full 100-0%, and back again.

Doing 100-50% and back again twice counts as a cycle.

doing 100%-90% and back again ten times counts as a cycle.

You get the idea.

Read the WHAT IS A CYCLE? section of the following link.
The link below should answer most, if not all, of your battery/charging questions, including tips for maximizing battery performance. If you haven’t already done so, I highly recommend you take the time to read it.
