Hi, I have MacbookPro 13 (early 2015) with 680 full charge cycles on the battery.

The battery design capacity now is at 76%. Is this normal battery degradation?

Cheers :)

76% at 680 cycles is actually pretty good in my book regardless of what Apple says about 80% and 1000 cycles, especially if we're talking about a 2015 MBP.

It doesn't matter how much you pamper your laptop. The battery is eventually going to disappoint you. Batteries don't age gracefully and treating the computer gingerly isn't necessarily going to give a battery what it needs to decline slower.

Mac OS will flash the service battery warning at you anytime your battery drops below 80%. The battery could be otherwise fine other than being old and it'll still tell you your battery needs service.

The disparity between what they said and what I experience if huge! Is my issue here :(

If the deviation was a little bit off from the claim. Sure, chalk it up to additional external factors.

Buts its same as if Tesla told you that the range of your car should be 300 miles on full. And you end up with 170miles only. :(

However, I am not very knowledgable in terms of Apple "warning systems". Does "service recommended" show because of dropped cappacity. Or something far serious is happening?!
I heard old batteries swell up. Which is dangerous fire hazard.

If the batteries were swelling up. Would it say something besides "service recommended"? (because this seems more of a suggestion rather than DANGER WARNING) :)

If the battery was swelling up. You'd know because it'll start warping the case and press the trackpad so it can't click. Eventually it can do a lot of damage. That damage could take a long time or happen fast.

The warning is just that the capacity isn't good anymore.

OP:

You didn't specify where you are, but if you're in the USA I'd suggest trying a brick-n-mortar Apple Store to see if you can get the $199 deal for a new battery.

For $199 you get:
- a new Apple-labeled battery
- installation
- a short warranty.

That's "a deal", in my book.

DO NOT go to a "3rd-party provider" for this.
Go to a genuine Apple Store.

They may also provide this service "by mail" (they send you a prepaid box, you send them the Mac, they fix it and return it) -- not sure, but worth a call if you can't get to an Apple Store...

Hello, Nope not in USA. I am in Austria. Where Apple isnt official here. But it sells its products via certified vendor that is present in many other EU countries "iStyle".

They gave me a quote today for expences. Around 400eur.
Why so much?
Beacuse they gave me some BS reason that they cant just change battery. They "bundle" this service along with few other ones (mic, trackpad...etc).
So yeah. No thank you. Asked 3rd party. Gave me 140 eur quote. And will just replace battery.

Apple and its official subsidiaries wont and shouldn't get a penny from anyone.

Telling me they wont do an oil job unless I also get a clutch replacement with them. -.-

my m1 pro is 98% battery health with only 36 cycles. According to coconut battery I am down to 92%. What in the world is going on and can I get the battery replaced under my apple care plus?

If it drops below 80% while you're AppleCare+ is still active, you can get it replaced. Otherwise, no.

FYI on the 2013 MBp. Mine is sitting here to the side. The touchpad clicker stopped working months ago, but I gave it no mind. Now the system info says 581 cycles and "maintenance advised". In the last week the case distorted -- the bottom is now convex. I can see that any more expansion will start hitting other components, like the keyboard and perhaps the motherboard. Here in Washington DC, where the Apple Store has a replacement battery, the install cost will be about $300. So -- 8 year old computer, won't handle the new OS, some companies' software no longer friendly. What does one do? I sprung for a new one. Not waiting for a catastrophic failure in the middle of something important. Migrated my data over today. Hate to junk a nice looking MBP, but it probably has only a year or two left in life. Good luck.

We are at almost the same situation. My Early 2015 MBP 13" has 910 cycle and %76 battery health as well. And I started having "service recommended" sign, which I managed to remove by removing some of the .plist files for the Power management system.

However I am not feeling so relaxed for this topic, as the device can not keep much battery time like the past oooolllldddd days. (It was able to work with battery up to 10 hours in 2016 :) )

I am living in Germany and tomorrow I have a Genius Bar appointment at the Apple Store, we will see what they do. I might most probably consider replacing the battery, and they replace the top case completely. This might be a good hit for my device to make it last a few years more.
