I thought I would add to this. I have noticed that since the other day when I was hit the famous no third party apps running problem, which I haven't had time to restore yet, the battery life has been 10x better. So I am sure its something running in the background that shouldn't be. It could be just not messing with the apps itself that is saving battery life, but even while browsing with Safari, checking email, phone conversations, etc, it is lasting longer.

Sorry I don't understand what you mean, how did you get 10x better battery life by doing what?

Apps still run when you hit the sleep button and the display turns off. The apps only really turn off when you hit the Home button first. Make sure you hit the home button after using an app before putting it to sleep.

I have ALWAYS hit HOME button to exit and before putting it to sleep.

My wife and I have both have 1st gen iPhones and find that Solitaire City (which is excellent) drains the battery overnight, EVEN IF you press the home button when finished. I've taken a my fully charged iPhone to bed, had a couple of games (10 mins), pressed the home button, then switched off. In the morning, the iPhone will not respond to the home button. The on switch gives the low power screen telling me to charge it.

I thought each time I must have been mistaken, that I forgot to press the home button after all. But my wife is also convinced that she did so on hers, and she she finds the same thing.

The latest version of this program claimed to have fixed some draining issue, but not for us.

What I find most interesting about this is that if the home button was pressed, then the app should not be capable of draining the battery, but it clearly is. It must be stumbling across, and proving the existence of, some bug in 2.0.2.

My iPhone will only run the native apps right now because of the "app bug" in the iPhone. So I am noticing it is allowing the battery to last longer.

Since 3rd party apps aren't allowed to run in the background (yet) I would think this is something in the supplied set. Doing some testing like disabling the push for email, turning off wifi, gps, going full airplane mode might help (sounds like some of this has been tried).

As for high usage, something I noticed. Unless I completely charge the phone this information is not reset. I make it a point to plug in when I drive and since I'm not driving long enough to completely charge I seem to show the high usage numbers.

Thank for this insight.

BUT I have to say, I don't do charging incompletely in between.

So, the usages in pics are from ONE complete charge only.

Will Update With More Pics

RIGHT NOW, I HAVE JUST CHARGED MY iPHONE. (AND WON'T TURN MY iPHONE OFF or POWER CYCLE.)
I WILL UPDATE THIS THREAD WITH MORE PICS, FROM 0 USAGE.

I believe if you charge in between it will say something along the lines of "iPhone has been charged during this time". But Usage and Standby times still continue even if you charge in between, so this may account for some high Usage times.

It's because no two iPhone batteries are the same apparently.

6 hours usage?

Man, if I get 3 hours usage, I have done VERY well.

About the only way I know to get more than that is heavy iPod usage as that doesn't appear to drain the battery that much.

Wow, no 3rd party apps, I would be tempted to get stuff.

Could you provide me/us the sources about the "app bug"? Thanks.

I have a bunch of things on it, its just there is a bug that keeps making them not work and go back to the home screen. I don't feel like doing a 6 hour restore to remove and put them back on again (did it 6 times already!!!) so I am letting it be. After a few days it does it again anyway. Its one of the big fixes I am waiting for in 2.1 in September.

There is a whole huge thread on it here (as lots of people are having this problem).

Back After Phone Charged

Well, I am back.

(Hadn't turn it off. After I charged.)

(Almost 5 hours later. Notice, almost 5 hours of usage, but battery stays the same. Only made, a several minutes call.)

For those who questioned me about how I used my phone to get those HIGH USAGE VALUE, this time I've barely used it (only 1 couple-of-minutes call) after a complete charge.

ANSWER:
It's obviously a bug, that is, it counted my stand-by time as usage time. Simple.

Note: I just now turned off my phone, and I'll bet it will fix this temporary.

I've had this same thing a few times. After closing out of any apps there were running I would put the phone in standby and go to bed. When I got up in the morning the usage and standby times would be almost equal.

To stop what ever was running in the background; turn off the phone and then turn it back on again.

After I did that it would go back to normal usage figures overnight of only a few minutes compared to the 7 or 8 hours I was getting earlier.

I still haven't been able to figure what application seems to get the phone into this state, I have found that cycling it on an doff clears it up.

I don't know how true it is, but it came from the mouth of an iPod Bar genius at Regents Street:

Apparently, the 10 second hold down of the home button doesn't just force-quit the current application, it force-quits all applications. You could maybe try comparing an overnight run after a force-quit?

Some of these apps definitely drain the battery in no time. Aurora Feint is probably the worst one on my phone for consuming battery.

I have had the problem of overnight battery drain ever since I upgraded from the original iPhone to the 3G. It doesn't happen all the time, but I will often lose perhaps 50% of my battery charge overnight. This never used to happen with the original phone--even with v2.0 installed. I have 3G and push turned off on my 3G phone. It happens less now that I've gone to 2.0.2, but every once in a while, I'll check my phone in the morning and the battery will be almost gone.

Hopefully my new iPhone won't give me any problems.
Would somebody e-mail Steve right now regarding this issue, quite a major issue I would say.
Thanks for sharing OP.

I also had read that holding the home key for 5sec would clear out any 'stuck' app memory.

Never thought of that, but that would make sense since, holding the home button for 5 seconds completely quits the app, so I guess the app memory as well.

It's been covered already, search for it.
:apple:

.... and I mentioned it on Page 1 of this thread - I guess people just don't read through prior to posting.

The battery not budging is a sure sign that it's the standby time being counted as usage bug.
