Just to clarify, what I posted was not incorrect.

It's not wrong. I never said the app remains running, you just implied it. In fact, I've gone out of my way to point out that apps are "frozen" when in the drawer in iOS4. See my other posts. ;)

the reason I included you was because of line:

It's like how OS X works, where when you close a window the application is still running, but there are no documents on screen.

which I took as you have 'quit' the app (so there is no more system resorces used) as opposed to 'minimizing' the app where it is still fully open just not on the screen, that's why you are/were wrong

When you're in an iOS 4 app and you click the home button, the app does not quit it gets put in a suspended state and put into the drawer. If you want to quit the app, you have to open the drawer and quit it manually.

that would have been a little more clarified to the people who know nothing about iOS multitasking

needless to say I am not

I'm having the same issue. Went to bed with 90% battery, woke up 7 hours later and it was completely dead. It wouldn't even turn on without plugging in the power cable.

I tried it again last night. I started with 65% battery. I killed all background apps and put it in airplane mode. I woke up with 35% battery. Something is seriously wrong here.

What the hell is going on?

after killing all my apps and left wifi on overnight, NO BATTERY DRAIN! so yeah, whoever said to close out those apps in the taskbar, thank you! whoever says it's wrong, sorry but however it works - snapshot, ram suspension whatever doesn't matter, but it's sucking battery life being "open".

So last night I charged my iPod, played with it for like 2 hours, and 20% of the battery was gone already So I decided to leave it on overnight, playing all my song with the Wi-Fi on. Woke up today, the battery was around 60%. So I was like, oh great, this is not so bad! Than I played with it for like 2 hours this morning and then it turned off, had to recharge again.

I'm returning it Monday, and getting my money back. For $400, this is unacceptable! Plus the clicking noise, and the light leaking on the sides does not make it any better. So I'm just going to get my money back, and might get another one when all these issues are resolved!

I'm leaning more towards it being a multitasking thing and I say this because I have yet to use the multitask functionality at all. I have been using the camera lots, e-books, audiobooks, music and Netflix and have been VERY impressed with the batter life compared to my 2Gen. I also have nothing sent to push, hate being woken in the middle of the night with mail alerts because I forgot to turn the volume from max to min.

I just surfed the web, took some photos and recorded a couple of minutes of videos and I'm still at 100%. I close all apps after using them though, I don't know if that actually makes a difference.33

Are we in the minority here? Possible bad battery? I might just have to return it. My 2G will have to do if I can't resolve this problem.

I got 53 hours from Thursday morning until just now on a charge, no music playing but a lot of browsing and app store fun in that time.

I hope someone gets to the bottom of this. I am always going to say Airplane Mode. My iPad doesn't drain a single percent with WiFi on overnight.

My 4G touch doesn't lose battery life overnight. Nor does my wife's 2G, running 4.1

Some people are probably running an app which keeps a service running in the background.

To those with battery life issues:
—Close all apps before going to sleep, see if battery is drained in the morning.
—If battery is not drained: leave only 1 app in the tray, go to sleep, see if battery is drained in the morning.
—If battery is not drained: leave only 1 different app in the tray, go to sleep, see if battery is drained in the morning.
—Repeat until you find the app draining your battery. Post results in this thread.

Skype is guilty of this, for sure. If you keep it running in the background, your wifi will be kept on, and it will eat your battery right up.

hey this might be a dumb question but how do you guys actually check the % of how much battery you have left? Is it through an app? I cant seem to find it in the General Settings. thanks!

On the iPhone it's settings -> general -> usage -> battery percentage (at top)
Would presume it's the same on the 4g touch.

Guess what is really needed here is some people with 3G and 4.1 to chime in.

I know what you mean. :( There's a lot of people here bulking and booing about battery life when they have 50+ apps in their multitasking drawer.

None of the iPod touches have this option. The only way to get the battery percentage is the jailbreak it.

You make it sound like Apple intended the app-drawer to eat up battery life.. This would be a bad design if so. Apple specifically said apps should be in a suspended state.. much like when you put a computer to sleep, very minimal if any power being used up to store said application. Fact is, there is no app that runs at full speed in the background, only certain APIs can..

So yes, I personally expect exceptional battery life with 50+ apps in my app-drawer.. iOS should know how to handle this properly without destroying battery life.. Since it appears like it might not be handling this correctly, signs are pointing to iOS 4.1 to be the problem.

Don't think comparing our 4g Touch's to a 3GS or iPhone4 would tell us much of anything.. Considering we use a different iOS build than they do - for all we know a line of code could be off in our iOS build causing pain and suffering.

same issue with 2 gen 8gb touch (no multi-tasking)

Ever since the last iOS update (4.1) I've had the same battery draining issue on my iPod, and as stated above I don't have multi-tasking. Yesterday I took my iPod out of my backpack and it gave me the 20% warning, and I hadn't used it since I recharged it the night before.

So I've turned off the "fetch" setting in Mail preferences and "notifications". We'll see how it flies from here.

Again, everything was fine before the update to 4.1.

Actually, if we know what plist file it is, then we could change the value for the battery percentage to "true". It's that simple, but someone needs to find out which plist file it is.

Sure, after the 4.1os jailbreak comes out :p

Well; no. If you previously had changed this on a jb firmware (eg. 4.0) and backed up with iTunes, the setting will be retained when restoring the backup. Even to a later sw version.
Of course, this doesn't help with people who only have the 4th gen as 4.1 is the earliest it will run (?), although you could modify an earlier gen of touch and restore the backup from that...

I meant third gen touch, not 3G / 3GS ;)
But yes, it could be a bug unique to the 4th, or it could be a hardware problem unique to the 4th. Or it could affect all 4.1 devices.
