Hm, I was about to do the $3.99/month AppleCare+ extension thing, but I have an Edition, so I don't actually have AppleCare+, I just have a two-year limited warranty.
If you like the watch (not sure what series you have) just pay the $80. You'll have at least 2 more years use out of it

Not sure that is even an option if not less than 80%. For a number of products (like iPads) Apple will not accept it for battery replacement at less than 80%, warranty or no warranty, Applecare or no Applecare, even if you tell them to shut up and take your money. Reason is that for many products they do not actually replace the battery, but give you a replacement refurb or new (which obviously costs them a lot more that $79.)
If so, the solution is just to wait until it is at 79% (barring conspiracies).
I will be interested to hear what happens in this case.

Not sure about the watch but my iPhone X is showing 81% capacity and the service battery is on notifications for battery settings. I have a appointment to have it replaced this Saturday in store for $69. I don't know if the watch has the same notification when the battery can't produce full performance but I had the battery in my 6S replaced at my cost when it was at 86% in 2017. The specialist said it wasn't necessary but I told him I would pay to have it replaced and they had no issues complying. I understand the watch has to be replaced and can't be done at the store but i'd bet if your persistent, eventually you'll find someone that will honor the battery replacement cost ($79) considering they list it as an available service option..

As a former Apple Technician, consumables aren't covered under warranty (unless you have AppleCare) so the battery dropping to 80% without it failing a hardware diagnostic test wouldn't be covered. If the battery has explicitly failed in that test, that's different to it simply running to 80% through use.

Hopefully they have AppleCare+.

When I checked the Apple Watch repair/service website under battery it does confirm the normal warranty (non AppleCare+) does not cover the battery’s “that wear down from normal use”.

Same for any Apple battery. AppleCare+ will cover a drop to 80% or lower, standard warranty only covers a battery failure (which is flagged after we ran diagnostics).

My launch day S6(Ti) is at 85% which seem exceptionally low given it only a year old.

I hadn't considered a S7 but might now.

I'm hesitant on getting the battery replaced as I don't know if I would trust opening this thing up... I swim a lot.

they dont replace the battery. they send you a whole new (Refurb) watch.

AppleCare+ extension for Edition watches is $4.99/month. $3.99/month is for regular (aluminum/stainless) and Nike models.
 
Mine is at 91%. It doesn’t look good. What happened to the batteries Apple used in late 2020? Both iPhone 12 (92%) and Apple Watch 6 have poor battery health.

My watch fell to 79% battery health about a week ago. I didn't change my usage habits recently besides charging more often since I was often not making it through the day.

I opened a support case with Apple and they ran some diagnostics and had me send it in for battery service. I was just notified that they are replacing my watch entirely. I assumed they would have just replaced the battery.

That‘s not looking good, for new devices. My launch day iPhone 12 Pro Max is at 88% and I’m not a heavy user on LTE or streaming and such. My AW S4 does waay better, after almost 3 years still at 93%, on my wrist all day and night.

I’ve never had such poor battery health in any of my previous iPhones. The 12 and the Watch 6 are the worst ones.

Ditto. My iPhone X has better battery life and I got years of using it more than now, when working from home.
