I calibrated my new MBP just like it said to do on the Apple website.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1490

At first, my battery life was 10 hours and 32 minutes. Then in a minute, it dropped to 9 hrs and 32 minutes. Then in a couple minutes, it dropped to 7 hours and 30 minutes. Now, a few minutes later, it's back at almost 9 hours.

Is this normal?

That readout is variable depending on how you are using your MBP...if you raise the brightness of the display or the keyboard backlight it will go down...if you are using a browser like Chrome (which is a bit of a battery hog) with multiple tabs open it will go down until you quit the app...if you are using the nVIDIA GPU it will go down as the discrete GPU kills the battery quickly...check you activity monitor to see the load on the CPU and what processes are open...
