so is it safe to say...as we upgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.3 then to 4.3.1...4.4 etc etc battery life will continue to get worse?? I hope this is not the case.

I think maybe that it's placebo. If battery life was getting worse and worse after each update the iPhone forms would be flooded with people complaining their battery life is half of what it was when they first got it.

Every time an update is released there are some people who swear they get less battery, probably because they are overanalyzing and actively looking for problems. Unless someone uses an iPad from 100% to 1% with a stop watch before an update and again after an update (and enough people repeat the experiment to get a real trend going), we just won't know for sure.

Calculating based on % drain over time may be a quick way to find an estimate, but we have no evidence that the battery drains constantly. For example, on my original iPad it would stay on 100% for 30-40 mins before it started draining.

On current iPads, maybe 80% up drains faster an usual and then slows later. These are all variables we need to consider.

just disabled the ping on my ipad 2, so far don't see any improvements.

Try disabling push email, or setting it to fetch just to see if that makes any difference. Also a hard reboot may help too. (hold power and home button until iPad restarts)

good idea on the hard reboot. we always do that with PCs after windows updates so why not on an ipad. will try that tonight.

I unplugged it yesterday when I got home from work and used it for a few hours then put it away and fell asleep (don't remember the %). When I woke up this morning, it was at 63% (though I left Twitter open, don't know if that matters).

When I left work this morning at 7:50, it was at 63%.
I'll let you guys know what mine is at after I get home from my dentist appt.

Came home about 6pm and it was at 62%. After using it for about 5 minutes, it went to 61%. Mail is set to fetch hourly and push and ping are off. Looks like I just needed at restart & recharge. Will post back if it goes abnormally low.

What apps do you all have installed and running in the background? I've noticed a pretty big difference in battery life between iPad 1 and 2, with iPad 2 being worse for me. The only app I have on the 2 that I didn't have on the 1 is IMO.im.

Also, does the iPad have a "usage" timer like there is on the iPhone?
