Close Safari before sleep.


Could also just shut down the entire thing right?

I did try that but it made no difference. For what it's worth (probably nothing) on Sierra and HS I didn't have to close Safari to have sleep mode work.
 
After upgrading to 14.1, I'm still having battery issues, but I've traced it to wifi. With wifi disabled, I lost maybe 1% battery charge during my hourlong lunch break; was editing four or five files in Audacity the whole time. Later on when I re-enabled my wifi and stayed connected to the same SSID, I lost about 25% of my battery charge. And somehow, when I cold-booted my Mac just a few minutes ago, I found my battery was at 59% (it was at 75% when I shut it down), and I lost 3% as I was typing this.
 
From Apple communities forum, read suggestion to activate hibernate instead of sleep. Initially I was a bit skeptic due to long wake up from hibernate in Windows OS. But I tried, and so happy with the results. It took 0.5 second longer to start typing password after wake up, which is insignificant. But, I got much better battery drain during hibernate, more power saving than sleep.

May not be wifi per se. May be something that gets active when wifi is enabled. There's plenty of stuff in the background these days going back and forth with the cloud. Check your activity monitor and see who's doing stuff. Maybe disable power nap.

I don't know what's going on. Before, I lost zero power while editing 4-5 audio files in Audacity. This morning, with the wifi off, I was editing just one file in Audacity, and I lost 7% battery power in about half an hour.

This was AFTER I looked in Activity Monitor and found a few stray processes that shouldn't have been there, so I uninstalled, altered the plist files, removed the items from startup, etc. I removed the Air Port Base Station thingy because I never had any Air Port equipment in the first place. I had a Logitech preference pane from when I tried my trackball out, so I uninstalled it and any Logitech software installed. I uninstalled Dropbox - I usually just use the web interface for that anyway. I went from three things in my Login Items to zero. I don't have my MBP in communication with iCloud at all -- I always skip that at startup. (When I need to use iCloud, I'll use the web interface. I just do NOT do the cloud thing, for many reasons...#1 being this concise, honest answer to the question, "Just what is the cloud, anyway?" The answer: "Someone else's computer.")

I did a lot of removals, a lot of reconfigs, and Activity Monitor now shows significantly fewer processes...yet somehow my battery life is even WORSE after doing that. (And its condition shows as normal.)

I'm very tempted to revert to High Sierra.
 
Have you done trying to switch to hibernatemode 25? I did this and it drains 1% in 12 hours.
 
On my 2013 MBA, battery life has been a lot worse than on HS.
Yesterday I unplugged my Air at 99%. After an hour of use it was down to 90%, so far, so good.
This morning, after being closed for 12 hours, the battery was down to 68%. A week ago I closed my Air when leaving uni, it was at 55%. Two days later (no use at all, it was left closed in my backpack) it was completely drained.
No clue why this happens. It used to be able to stay in sleep for days.
