Battery drain test

4h52: SE
6h36: 13 mini
6h48: 12
7h13: 14
7h15: 13
7h49: 14 Pro
9h31: 14 Max

14 Plus not available for testing but guesstimated at 9h23

So, in other words, if you want battery life, get the 14 Max or 14 Plus (or clearance 13 Max).

expected results, but just one surprise is that 13 is ahead of 14 (just 2 mins though!!)

how long does a 13 PM last for similar test (assuming 100% battery health)

The results are not directly comparable to the current test, but nonetheless here they are.

3h38: SE
4h20: 11
5h54: 12
6h26: 13 mini
7h45: 13
8h17: 13 Pro
9h52: 13 Max

Summary: The 13 Max is great, the 13 Pro is very good, and the 13 is good, whereas the 13 mini is just OK.

He says that he has verified that all the batteries are 100% healthy and last year the iphone 13 lasted 7hr45min and this year in his test the iphone 13 lasts 7hr15min  ¿?

The "Battery Capacity" figure in iOS is known to be inaccurate. We've got people here who have iPhone 13 for a year and still claim 100%.

Only way to be certain is to have a fresh battery installed, or at minimum, check the cycle count under Analytics.

Software updates over time both slow your phone down and use more energy. I know the battery gate debate was centered around whether or not Apple included a piece of code to intentionally slow down older phones (they did) but irrespective of that they don’t necessarily optimize their latest OS versions around older models.

My 13 PM doesn’t last as long on iOS 16 as it did on iOS 15. It’s not huge but I’m ending my day in the low 30s instead of high 40s.

BTW, Apple in their keynote stated that the 14 Plus (not Max) has the best battery life of any iPhone ever made.

Some of the stuff on their website contradicts this, suggesting that the Pro Max has the longest battery life, but either way we can be sure the 14 Plus has top notch battery life.

I prefer to look at these test results as general trends.

SE bad
13 mini mediocre
13/14 good
13/14 Pro very good
13/14 Pro Max excellent

And 14 Plus also probably excellent

It was interesting that he said his iPhone 13 Pro Max’s battery has degraded. I am obviously not as much of a power user as a tech reviewer, but my 13PM‘s battery one year later is still insane.

I am excited for these results.

I think he has used a new iphone 13, a used one would not make sense, it is easy to get a new one

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are essentially tied in this test.

Couple screenshots from Mrwhostheboss.13 Pro lasts longer by about 28 Min. Screen Shot 2022-09-17 at 5.43.57 PM.pngScreen Shot 2022-09-17 at 5.43.21 PM.png

Luke Miani's battery life test:

3 hour mixed test on three iPhones with 100% battery health. After test done, this is the remaining battery percentage:

iPhone 14 Pro Max: 70%
iPhone 13 Pro Max: 77% <-- Winner!
iPhone 12 Pro Max: 62%

10 hour video playback test:

iPhone 14 Pro Max: 33%
iPhone 13 Pro Max: 33%
iPhone 12 Pro Max: 6%

P.S. Earlier in the video they showed a defective image stabilizer in certain apps, and interestingly from the back of the iPhone, you could actually see the sensor vibrating. Apparently, this has been reported by several users. After a while, the camera stopped focusing properly, so they had to get it replaced at the Apple Store. He describes it here:

Curious how AoD affects that test, since it’s mostly based on active use. And even so, the 14 Pros still didn’t last as long as the 13 Pros.

Or did I miss something?

They did AoD tests with two iPhone 14 Pros, but the first test wasn't ideal since one of the phones was signed in and one wasn't. Their second test had both ones not signed in and left for 12 hours. The one with AoD off was at 100% (!) but the one with AoD on was at 86%. Pretty significant difference.

If you want to see it, it's here:

On the 13 Pro Max vs 14 Pro Max he did talk about setting the screens to 80% on the first 6x30mins test and to 100% on the 10 hour video test so not calibrated using a light meter as some testers do. According to Apple specs the screen on the 13 Pros are “1000 nits max brightness (typical); 1200 nits max brightness (HDR)” whereas for the 14 Pros they are “1,000 nits max brightness (typical); 1,600 nits peak brightness (HDR); 2,000 nits peak brightness (outdoor)”. I wonder whether at some times during the tests the screen on the 14 Pro Max might have been going a bit brighter so perhaps not a like for like test?

iPhone 14 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro - Always on display on vs off: Battery life drain is not insignificant.

After 12 hours with AoD on, battery drain was 15%.
With AoD off, battery drain was 3%.

Note that this was with the AoD actually always on. If you put it in your pocket or purse, the screen will shut off.
