iPhone XS Max Battery life with the XR and the XS Max

I'm surprised my the stamina on my XS Max - I wouldn't say it was longer than the R, but it comes pretty close. I love both phones, but the XR is noticeably chunkier and I like the slimness of the XS Max. Apple seems to be doing well with battery life.
