Yes, it is normal from time to time for it to say Not Charging and not show the percentage.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up! Whew! :) LOL... maybe it's came up before and I just didn't notice. I thought the computer was just not reading the battery or something...

I completely agree that it's fine to calibrate even a newer battery if you suspect readings are inaccurate, as stated in the Battery FAQ, but calibration would have zero effect on the OP's charging issue, only the accuracy of the battery readings.

The OP's first issue of charging stopped at 93% isn't a problem... it's by design that it does that. As for the failure to charge at 85%, calibration would have no effect on that. Resetting the SMC is the only procedure that might help, as long as the MagSafe adapter is working properly. Beyond that, it's a trip to the Apple store for testing.
93% is a bit low for me. 96% or higher and I would agree. 93% sounds like a calibration issue.

Edit:
I guess it doesn't matter now. The OP is all fixed.

From Apple Portables: Battery may not show a full charge in Mac OS X
Some Apple portable computers (PowerBook G4, iBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook, and MacBook Air) may not show the battery as 100 percent charged in Mac OS X, even when the power adapter is connected.

The battery may appear to stop charging between 93 percent and 99 percent.

This is normal. The batteries used in these computers are designed to avoid short discharge/charge cycles in order to prolong the overall life of the battery.

When setting the Mac OS X battery status menu bar icon to display charge state by percentage, you may notice that the reported charge stays between 93 or 95 percent and 99 percent.

To allow the adapter to recharge the battery to 100%, simply allow the charge to drop below 93%. The adapter will automatically recharge the battery to 100%.
