Theres a problem with the 3.0 Firmware see here https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=7906348#post7906348
I've had to go back to 2.2.1 on my 2g phone. (and now no battery issues, before i was getting about 3-4 hours) Somethings funky with 3.0.![]()
hats almost kind of reassuring that its 3.0 and that it could be fixed with an update
it must either be push notifications, or maybe because sfari keeps pages loaded now this drains battery?
I am still working on my 11 month old 3G. With 3.0 software, my battery life improved greatly. Like night and day different. Previously, my outlook push email would just drain the battery down in a couple of hours. The phone would actually get hot. So, I had been on the check it every 15 min setting. Went back to push with 3.0 and it's been great. I've been using the phone on and off since 7am today and it's been almost 11.5 hours and I'm still at 81%. Before 3.0, I'd be looking for a charger in a few hours.
I was about to say "NO F..KING WAY" and then I saw that your brightness was at 25%. At that level, the iPhone is only usable in a cave!![]()

Mine drains quickly too.
What I dont understand is why some of the the reviews that I have read of the 3G S have claimed to have such great battery life. For example, the "quick look" that Tomshardware did after they got their phone on Friday claimed that after 3 hours of constant 3G internet use, their battery was down only 25%.
Yet, mine sometimes drains visibly. For instance, tonite I drove approximately 1.5 miles to pick up a pizza for dinner. I had Google Maps open and was watching the route get tracked with the GPS. From my house to the pizza place, my battery went from 45% to 40%. WTF???? In like 4 minutes? Thats Absurd.
I am removing everything from my phone tonite....my email...all my music..all my apps....etc...and restoring it. I am wondering if something was screwed up when I initially set it up - from my most recent backup like the instructions recommended.
Otherwise I am going to stop by the Apple Store next week if they have phones and ask for a new one. This is ridiculous. But next, after I restore this, I will put a movie on, and see how long the battery lasts playing video...if it lasts the 10 hours that Apple claims the battery should last with video then its ok. Otherwise its off to Apple.
My battery life is excellent. Last night, I had 51% battery life left ater almost 6 hours usage. I watched a movie and a Simpsons episode plus about an hour of music and some phone calls.
This morning I woke up with 40% left after 24 hours and I recharged it because I had to leave.
Loving the 3G S battery life!
Oh, I keep everything on, push email / contacts and calendar on, 3G and wifi on, location services on and notifications off.
zacheryjensen,
Lithium batteries are similar to car batteries in that they have a limited number of charge/discharge cycles. Each full cycle will shorten the life of the next. Over time these cycles degrade the battery until it's no longer useful.
It's not a good idea to fully discharge Li batteries if you can avoid it. They do not suffer from the memory issues that NiCd/NiMH have. The "let it drain all the way down" advice for those batteries does not apply to lithium batteries.
Then why does Apple themselves say to fully discharge your 3G at least once a month?
