so i updated my 3g to 3.0.1. and afterwards i noticed that my battery percentage was still there after the update. has this happened to anyone else?

I can go one better :)

My 3G is not jail-broken. This is what mine looks like after 3.0.1 update.

(Must confess that it was jail-broken at one time. My "AT&T" change and Battery % change stayed after I had "un-jailbroken" it.)

Suppose one over-wrote the defaults for which of the (non-shown) applications show on the springboard via jailbreak and then updated, think those apps would stay shown on legit SW?
 
That's because the iPhone updates don't replace any of those files that stay the same when doing a routine update. In order to get rid of these left behind "tweaks" you have to do a DFU restore.
Thanks. I did know that. I chose to just do a restore when I removed the jailbreak. I wish some of the other tweaks had stayed too but those appear to be the only two. :)
