I drained mine last night to 9% and set it to charge. It went from 9% to 23% in an hour. I went to bed so I don't know how much longer it took to get to 100% but when I got up 6 hours later it was at 100%. I'm going to do one more drain to fully calibrate and this time I'll do it during the day and keep track. So tomorrow I'll have a better idea.

What originally came with the iPads may be slightly different, but they're all 10 watts and Apple only sells one model for all three iPad generations. See:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC359LL/A?fnode=MTc0MjU4NjA

How fast the battery charges is controlled by circuitry inside the iPad and how much current the charger is capable of providing. All iPad wall chargers are the same in this respect.
I believe the voltages are different. That is what I meant.

I didn't time it, but my ipad was at ~30+% when I went to bed. When I woke up 6 hours later, it was at 100%.

Think there may be some problem with your charger or socket.

I ran mine down to completely flat from out the box (96%).

It would not turn on when I plugged it into the charger at 00:30 hrs. I got up for the gran prix (05:50) it was 88% full.

@ 07:30 it was 100%.

7hrs to fully charge mine from flat.

Used the charger that came in the box.

Carl.

Yes, that was the problem methinks, lol. I was charging an iPad with iPhone charger, what a shame.

Mine charges almost as quickly as the iPad 1 did. Would probably only take about 4-5 hours for a full charge. Something is definitely wrong if it's taking you guys any konger than that.

Why does my new iPad take forever to charge? It has been on the provided apple wall charger all day and still not at 100%. If the iPad is gonna take 24 hours to fully charge then I don't want it. Anyone else having this issue?

It's not a big issue if you plug in to charge every night before you go to sleep.

I think I read somewhere that if you use the old USB cable from old iPhone charger cable, the new iPad will not charge correctly? So make sure you use the cable that came with your new iPad to charge it. But if it's true that it slowly charging, then it's going to be a problem for people who run their alarm clock app on the iPad and they will find out that their new iPad will charge slowly even if it's plugged in because they are running an app which kinda sucks.

Anyway, is it ok to calibrate the battery now this early?

7-9 hours for me. I went to bed with it at 20% around 3am and it's 92% now (10:30am).

So i'm thinking around 10-15% per hour give or take. definitely an overnight change to say the least.

I would hate to be down on the battery without power to charge it. "Flash charging" it through out the day like the iPhone and iPad 2 won't work.

Just keep it simple, just plug it in to charge every night. I don't bother with battery maintenance. Once and a while you'll forget to plug in to charge then you can use that as an opportunity to calibrate.

I have been using my old iPhone 3 or 4 charger. Did apple change the cable and dock for the New iPad? I didn't even take it our the box already having old ones all around the house.

Mine was at 70% last night. Charged it overnight & it only charged to 90%. Heck, it had a 92% charge out of the box. Doesn't seem quite right.

Your iPHONE charger charges at about ONE HALF the rate of an iPAD charger. Look at the output ratings printed on the chargers. iPhone I think is 5 watts iPad is 10 watts. I'm surprised the iPAD doesn't say "NOT CHARGING" with the iPHONE charger. People doing that are in for real long charge times.

No that is not right. What charger are you using. Some are using their iPhone charger and that will not work well.

If you are using the charger that came with it and it did not charge your iPad over night, return it.

Mine went from about 67 to 94 in 2 hours. I was charging from my new iMac's USB port. That thing must be powerful!

Thank you I did not know that. I will use the other charger now and see if my time improves.

Important note!

Be sure to check the Amp rating on the charger too. I had a couple of 10 Watt apple chargers from the past but they are only 1.0 amp. The one that comes with the iPad is 2.1 amp. This is in really small print on the side of the charger and other than that number, they look identical.

I don't know about everyone else but my iPad charges fairly quick i had it plugged into my macbook pro to transfer my music collection and it went up from 59 to 73% in about 30 mins.

Mine came out of the box at around 75%, used it all day yesterday and this morning for a few hours down to 5%. Plugged it in, took a shower and 15 minutes later it is now at 9%. Checked and I have a 2.1A charger.

You sure that wasn't an old iPhone charger? My old iPad charger is 2.1 amps...

I'm charging at a rate of 20% an hour from the wall plug, so it should take about 5 hours. Doesn't seem too bad. :)

The new battery is 40% larger.. Therefore it will take a lot longer to charge! It's quite simple.

Make sure your using a 2.1 AMP charger, your iPhone charger is 1.0 AMP.. Now that will be a long charge time..
