I came across this review today and the battery test shocked me:

Now if you don't want to watch the video, both phones are set to refresh the browser every 10 seconds on the same website. After 3 hours the % remaining on each phone is as follows:
    iPhone 6s+: 19% (total battery size 2750)
    Mate 8: 57% (total battery size 4000)

Now you might say well the Mate 8 has a much larger battery, which is true. However if you do the math the following should be true in theory:
Mate 8 with 2750 mAh battery = 30% left after the same test
Mate 8 with 2000 mAh Battery = 17% left after the same test

Please also keep in mind that the Mate 8 is pushing a 6 vs 5.5 inch screen.

Now the reason I started this topic is to create a discussion on what is the main reason the Mate 8 is this good.

    1. is it because Huawei makes the Kirin chipset and is able to optimize it for their own phone?
    2. because the screen is 1080p?
    3. A combination of both?
    4. Some other reason.

I think it is 2. Makes me wonder how much better would phones like the Note 5, 6p, etc would do. If you agree with 2, does that mean when others say "the iPhone battery is that good because the software and hardware are optimized for each other" is false?

The Mate 8 is 7.9mm thick and actually lighter than the iPhone 6s+ for those who want to know.

well the 6S plus is 1080p too so doubt that matters.

Battery life is a huge plus no pun with the 6S plus. I have 35% left and it has 24 hours standby and I can bet with min use I can last my full 12 hour shift now until 6am.

mate 8 has a huge battery as you stated but no matter what that is impressive battery life. I think it depends on the user if you aren't techy battery life lasting all day isn't a huge issue but for people like us it is important certainly if we do a fair amount on it.

The reason why I brought up the 1080p screen is, even with the same size battery as iPhone 6s+ in theory, the Mate 8 still does much better. So does 2k screens on other android phones plays such a huge factor in battery life? Does this mean the Note 5, S6, Nexus 6p would have better battery life than the 6s+ if they had a 1080p screen?

EDIT: Just remembered that the Nexus 5x has a 2700 mAh battery and 1080p screen and does quite a bit worse than the 6s+ on battery. So perhaps Huawei has worked on the software (like sony) or the Kirin is just that efficient.

For me it's got to be software related

Seems Google is doing something in the background. On my note series I felt after upgrading software it did far more in the background.

I think it goes without saying that it takes more battery to power a 2K screen than a 1080 screen.

I have never heard of the Mate 8 but battery life is my number one priority on a phone. My current phone can get 8-9 hours screen on time routinely. It will be at 7:50-8 with 15% left

If all things consistent that's impressive battery life from the mate 8. That's a big battery lol

It's probably a mix of great SW optimisation, plus Kirin SoC being built well and not rushed and possibly Huawei using a LCD Panel that is very lite on power consumption..

My Note 4 gets fantastic battery life, I usually have around 25-30% left at the end of the day and thats with heavy use and a 2K display.

Most Android phablets get great battery life.
Never thought I'd find a fellow Flossy fan outside his channel.
The guy is such a OG.

He buys all of the phones he reviews. So he can tell it like it is without having to worry about pissing an OEM off and not getting the next phone they release.

Got to love reviewers like that. I think Erica Griffin does the same if I'm not mistaken? Both of them are very straight up about the devices they review.

Yeah two of the best reviewers. They tell you like it is. Although Flossy, it seems once the phone is gold its an automatic win lol.
