I love using my trackpad, I really do enjoy the intuitive nature of gliding my finger over the surface to move the cursor around. And the small amount of deskspace needed to use it is a bonus, no more knocking my coffee with the mouse as I try to get up to the top corner of my 27" screen.

But the batteries bug the crap out of me, really annoy me. Apple is all yo we're so green! we make our computers out of % recyclables, we package them in recyclables, we don't use bad things.. but why do they do all this wireless stuff and give us no wired alternative? So my trackpad is dead, the batteries they sold with it are not rechargeable, and now I have those to dispose of it a responsible way.

I don't want to feed my trackpad a constant stream of batteries, and I am fed up with rechargeables that cost a small fortune and lose their charge after a year of use and still need to be thrown out anyway. So is there anyway to actually mod a battery driven device to work off usb?

Have you tried the new NiMH rechargeable batteries like the Eneloop? They stand up really well and don't lose the ability to hold a charge for quite some time. They're also pretty affordable.
