Well, an easy way to find out is to just download it, and run it...

If it needs the update, it will do it, and if it doesn't...well...it won't run it.

dont install stuff that your computer doesnt need. run software update and it will tell you what you need to install

Well even if he does run an update that he doesn't need, it will tell him that his computer does not need it, and therefore it will not update...

I've tried it before, so I know how it works.
