iPod touch battery usage when docked

When the Touch is being operated while it is docked, is it tapping power from the battery? In other words, once it is docked, is it bypassing the battery and getting its power straight from USB? Or is it still draining the battery and it'll just automatically charge the battery as it is being drained?

I think it gets it power straight from the usb so it does not drain your battery

I don't have an answer for you but another question... How is the battery life? I tried a search but came up blank. That is one of my concerns.
