I was hoping to see if anyone can confirm that there’s a battery array in the magic keyboard. I know iFixit has not released a tear down yet. I was curious since the shipping box that the magic keyboard came in had a battery warning sticker on it.

It shouldn’t have. As far as I know, it only has pass through charging.

I suppose its possible. The battery life decrease so far for me has been pretty negligible for this device. I guess we will find out soon enough.

People keep asking this, but no--there is no battery inside the Magic Keyboard. There is just pass through power so you can charge the iPad from the port on the keyboard, but the keyboard itself does not store any power. The Smart Connector powers the keyboard from the iPad.

Does anyone notice if the iPad charges as fast when going through the keyboard port?

I read online (I can’t remember where) that the iPad charges slower through the USB C sport on the keyboard.

with the Apple provided USBC cable it charges at full speed. With a third party one, im finding capped charging speeds not sure if that’s universal. Plugging into the iPad port charges at full speed regardless.

Thanks - I think that is what I see too, but need to analyze it more. Using Apple 29watt charger and their usb-c cord too.

I didn’t time it, but it seems to me like my charge time using a 30W fast-charge setup is slower through the keyboard port than when plugged directly into the iPad Pro. Makes sense. You’d have to expect that passing fast-charging through the smart connector would be difficult.

Note: I saw on another thread that someone tested it and it comes in somewhere between the 18W charger and the 30W charger when you power through the pass-through in the case. So won’t feel slow to many, but will feel a little slow to those of us who use the 30W setup.

I spoke to Apple directly about this and they confirmed they do not use a battery. I needed to know as I’m getting an international one posted to me.

FWIW, I find that it charges at a similar rate through the Smart Keyboard when using the bundled 18W charger.

I find my iPad discharges noticeably faster, although it doesn’t bother me because I can plug in. And the charging port is so much more confidently located.

It doesn't charge at full speed, it charges 22W instead of 30, still good, but not full speed.

Yes I think it caps out around 20W which is much faster than the old Logitech Base, no fast charging, but plenty fast for most uses. Just no advantage to using higher wattage chargers with the keyboard.

saw someone on reddit did a test it was around 20.5W through the passthrough and up to 26W direct to the ipad.
