After a shipping incident where my MacPro7,1 was seemingly used as a bowling ball, I took it as an opportunity to get my daughter on the repair tools. Many delays later (self-service repair also use UPS as their courier in the UK) and the poor thing has been resurrected, and the actual repair part was fun!
However, I'm going to document my setup journey in this thread because there's already been an "interesting" problem, and I've not been able to find much mention of it, so could do with your collective wisdom.
The end goal is to have Sequoia on the Apple SSD, and Bazzite on an SSD mounted on a Highpoint SSD7101A-1 PCIe card, which I've removed from my MacPro5,1.
I did think that I was already finished. The MacPro7,1 passes diagnostics, in Recovery I turned off secure boot and allowed booting from external devices. Erased the internal SSD using a Sequoia installer on USB, restored Sequoia, system boots and everything's lovely. I start setting up the machine.
Dropped in the Highpoint card and booted with option pressed, and it showed me my Bazzite install from the MacPro5,1. Decided to boot it to give it a try, and aside from a couple of issues with the Broadcom wireless and the applesmc module not really understanding what the system is, it all worked. To get around those boot delays I just blacklisted the offending modules with:
Things continued fine the rest of the day. The machine was used as normal, rebooting, power off, power on. No issues. I get up the next day and power it back on. It fails to boot macOS, kernel panics and powers off. Booting in verbose mode very briefly shows an applekeystored error and though I can boot it into Recovery on the internal drive, nothing else will bring it back - other than erasing the entire Apple SSD, which I did. Set things back up and this morning, same problem.
In case there were any firmware updates I may have missed on Sequoia I did a full DFU mode restore, Internet Recovery installed Big Sur, and then upgraded straight to Tahoe 26.6.2. System firmware didn't change, it's on 2103.160.2.0.0 (iBridge: 23.16.16068.0.0,0).
I'm going to trundle on with this, but has anybody else seen this sort of behaviour? Could it be my Bazzite install nuking something? It boots straight from the picker, no intermediary like rEFInd or OpenCore. The only other oddity in the system is a Blackmagic DeckLink Quad HDMI Recorder PCIe card, which has a slightly fussy extension installation - but it's a supported config, so shouldn't be an issue.
