It's not necessarily - watching 30 minutes of clips from YouTube uses just as much bandwidth as watching a single 30 minute iPlayer programme.

It's all O2. I imagine the only reason O2 allow YouTube without any fuss is because it's built into the firmware and probably in their contract with Apple that they have to provide default phone services.

im really impressed with the iplayer on my iPhone 3G! its works great, really smooth, the video quality its awesome, its so much better then youtube. It almost seems like HD quality!

I find their website on the iPhone absolutely brilliant, and I'm only being greedy, but does anyone know if they plan on a standalone app?

iPlayer Home Screen icon

Has anyone noticed that, on 2.0 or iPhone 3G (not sure which is the problem), the home screen icon for iPlayer is just a plain old shot of the page and not the nice custom icon we had with 1.1.4?

EDIT: Just a thought - it could be the new iPlayer beta site that's the problem?

They've just done a complete overhaul of the iPlayer site, so looks like they must have forgotten to add back in the meta tag for the iPhone web clip icon.

BBC iPlayer Videos are so high quality, if O2 allowed it on 3G, it would probably affect and slow down the whole 3G network. Youtube videos are tiny compared to the rich quality BBC shows on iPlayer

Not necessarily the most relevant post in the thread, but I just discovered the amazing show that is Top Gear, and was really upset that the BBC iPlayer can't be watched outside of the UK...:(

can you watch the bbc iplayer on your iphone outside the uk?

No afraid not. BBC iPlayer doesn't work via the cellular network so needs WiFi. If your outside the UK you won't have a UK-based IP address allocated to you. Its another reason why the iPlayer is limited to WiFi only.
