thefunkymonkey is right. Of course, if you have a VPN server based in the UK, and you could dial up to it (and set "route all traffic via VPN") then you could get around this whilst abroad.

yeh course you can, you can only access the iplayer over wifi and not 3G, and if your abroad your just connecting to a normal website (www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer), so there wont be any restriction in accessing bbc iplayer abroad.

Unfortunately it isn't this easy. :( There is a nasty message that pops up saying something about programs not being available outside the UK. And of course programs is spelled wrong and everything ;). Its enough to make you weep really...

And us BBC America watchers don't get full episodes...

BBC iPlayer Videos are so high quality, if O2 allowed it on 3G, it would probably affect and slow down the whole 3G network. Youtube videos are tiny compared to the rich quality BBC shows on iPlayer

Not true. Yes, the quality IS great, but the videos are only encoded at 400 kbits/s (they use H.264 codec and professional encoders). Standard Youtube videos are about 200 kbit/s and around 350 kbits/s for the 'High Quality', but they still look pants due to an inferior codec and amateur content.

So, as previously mentioned, it's more likely that O2 had to agree to Youtube working, but they have no obligation to allow iPlayer videos to stream over their 3G network.

Remember when iPlayer was launched, and there were regular DSL ISPs complaining that it could break the internet and all that? I don't think we'll see it supported on 3G any time soon. Besides, they may be licensing issues.

I have been waiting for an app to fool the iPhone in to thinking it's on WiFi though. Would be fantastic for the iTunes store. Maybe now we have 3G speeds, I'll get my wish.

Remember, the 2.0 firmware has been jailbroken.

...Go to the web page www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer in Safari, tap the + button at the bottom, and tap "Add to Home Screen".

It still doesn’t let you use the icon though as it automatically redirects you to the mobile version and uses a small section of the site for the button image. There used to be an iPhone version of the site but that doesn’t seem to be there now just a general mobile version!!

Yep, page 1 of this thread!

Oops my bad!

Anyway is it O2 that wont let you watch the clips via 3G or is it the BBC themselves? i just tried it via 3G and it just looks like the BBC wont allow it to me!

More than likely the BBC is blocking access over the celluar network. They determine your worldwide location via your IP address, since you will not have an IP address as such over the celluar network, they block access.

You still have an IP address.

The BBC block network access 'cos O2 told them they'd do it otherwise and might take other bits of the site with it. That simple.

One would note that people using Nokia N95's with hacks to let them get to iPlayer are told the same thing.

Phazer

By the way, the missing iPlayer icon has now been fixed. I have a friend who works in their web development team, and he got it sorted out the day after I told him about it - that's what I call productive!

You have to delete the web clip icon and add it back in to update it.

Ive also read that the BBC are making the video format for the iPhone iPlayer system wide. They are now using the H.264 and AAC+ codecs at 800Kbps or all iPlayer videos.

Watch it! Remember it's called "English" and not "American"! I think we'll lecture you on how to spell words correctly if you don't mind. ;)

Top banana :D

And how f'king cool does that icon look on your home screen? My iPhone just got 10 times better in about 30 seconds! Please say thanks to your mate, what a star!

If anyone else has the (grossly overpriced) TV out cable, iPlayer works a treat-- and the quality is superb.

I'm outside the UK and I remember reading somewhere that you can access iPlayer if you set up a proxy that's based in the UK and then it thinks you are in the UK! If anyone knows a UK proxy and how to set one up on the iPhone please help!!

iPlayer abroad and on 3G - problem solved

Using a VPN service from www.UKiVPN.com I am able to view the iPlayer from abroad AND over 3G.

You can buy the VPN service for $50 (above site is about 1/2 the average price) and it provides you with a UK IP address either via your WiFi or 3G. Then iPlayer TV streams to your iPhone (or Mac / PC / Linux).

For BBC radio on the iPlayer, even an Edge connection works - which is great for listening to BBC radio in the car.

Set-up is simple and they even provide help via e-mail if you have an unusual configuration or techno-fear:rolleyes:

As well as a UK VPN (3 servers) they also throw in a US server and a Canadian server - so American's abroad can still view US-only content.

I tried several solutions, but this was the only one that was reliable and fast enough to stream video.
