Hmmmm, Zane Lowe eh?

Apparently a great loss to Radio 1, funny thing being this guy rarely brings anything "new" to the table... Rather his team of researchers do.

But I digress, anyone with any music prowess about them ditched Radio 1 around 10 years ago... From the BBC perspective when it comes the discerning music listener then it's definitely all about 6 Music, and has been since its launch back in 2002.

Yes, you could argue it's all about demographics but at the end of the day Lowe was all about new music, and given he's allegedly in the business himself then he really should know better.

I would rather bludgeon my own ears with rusty screwdrivers than listen to Radio 1... It's that bad!

Lord knows what he's going to attempt to bring to the table over at Apple.

Doesn't that come close to some kind of music snobbery though?

Fact is that evening shows on Radio 1 do cover a wide range of music not covered by commercial radio.

Hope he's taking a desk job. If there's one thing I don't want to hear while listening to music it's radio "personalities" trying to be funny or extreme or whatever they call their banter. Right up there where with ads on the list of reasons why I don't care about getting the antenna fixed on my car.

BBC has no adverts, just promotions for other Radio DJ's.

I'd say Zane is the perfect person for Apple, takes his work seriously and he loves it. Scott Mills show and Matt Edminson are also good but i am guessing they are too bouncy for apple.

What time do you listen to it? 7am to 1pm it is terrible. We had it on all the time at work but was a relief when Scott Mills come on with Greg James at 4pm. They were energetic and quite funny, where as the breakfast show/Ferne and Hue are so boring it can't be described.

Apple should seriously consider purchasing Sirius XM and merging the whole system into iTunes radio or whatever they would choose to call it. 25 million subscribers, and with just about every new car being equipped with satellite radio, Apple could rapidly expand in that market. Virtually every new car would be integrated into the Apple ecosystem. Whether you choose to use satellite radio, cellular streaming or iTunes on your device, they would all work seamlessly together.

I think XM Sirius would be a very good fit with Apple, and concur wholeheartedly. I think it would blend well with Apple's other offerings.

And there goes my very last reason for ever listening to Radio 1 again... I'm sure they'll be heartbroken at my loss

As I'm massively outside the Radio 1 age demographic (38!) I've spent the last few years of radio listening in the awesome land of BBC 6Music but would always listen to Zane's show if I happened to be driving while it was on as I don't (yet!) have DAB in my car.

A big loss for the BBC and possibly even the British indie music industry. A massive gain for Apple.

The thing is, you can easily get recommendations (in the form of playlists) from Zane Lowe and many other high profile radio presenters and music publications via other music streaming services:

https://play.spotify.com/user/bbc_p...e&utm_source=open.spotify.com&utm_medium=open

http://www.deezer.com/playlist/1116486631

So the benefit of in-house music curation, rather than creating a platform where by anyone can publish playlists onto that platform (like Spotify/Deezer/Google Play Music), is not particularly clear to me.

As a platform, anything Apple does is hugely bigger than both the services you just linked to. For Zane it's a bigger audience and for Apple, I'm sure that we'll learn in the next few months the kinds of things they want to do.

It doesn't come close, it IS music snobbery. Love it or hate it, Lowe brought a lot to people who otherwise wouldn't have heard it. If you like music at all, then bringing people to the fold is a great thing. Otherwise you're just like comic book fans - the most unwelcoming fandom ever.

Comic book fans are like music fans. The comic book fans that bitch the most are the snobs, just like the music snobs. There's actually quite a big welcoming part of the fandom. I'm a massive comic book fan, but nothing like the snobs.

Haha your post just shows how little you know. Zane is good, he wouldn't have lasted this long if he wasn't. He knows his stuff.

Also, your issues with radio 1 do sound mostly like demographic related issues. A lot of the day stuff is for the younger audience. The evening stuff is a wider age audience. I personally won't listen to the day stuff as its not to my taste, but the evening stuff, like Zane Lowe and that, I listen when I am able to. 6Music has a fair amount of ex Radio 1 DJ's, so if you ditched Radio 1 for 6Music, just gives the demographics argument even more weight....

Mind you, since you claim to have ditched radio 1 for the last 10 years, you don't really have a reliable or valid opinion on the matter.... ;)

Unfortunately, those people are the loudest and just turn people off. It's a shame. Both mediums have such wonderful things to offer but for some reason, folk are just snobs about it. Down with the snobs I say.

Amazing track about music snobbery, and appropriately enough it was Zane Lowe who introduced me to Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip when he started playing the demo of Thou Shalt Always Kill on the very show he is now leaving....

This is actually very interesting. Zane has always had great scoops, mixed brilliant sets and really has his fingers in the industry pie. Its a nice hire by Apple, and shows that they are aggressively going after this new music sector - they're going to need all the help they can get to pull people toward them, not just a price cut. Exclusivity, exclusivity, exclusivity.

I have a US account so I can play with iTunes Radio and its a great service. As far as I understand its add free with match. Hope I can get this in Sweden soon. If it's possible for a seamless integration of my matched music with genius iTunes radio and a paid streaming service it's going to be awesome.

Very, very big news. This is going to have a big impact on where Apple goes with iTunes Radio and the Beats streaming service in the future. 2015 is shaping up to be a very interesting year!

unless you aren't in the US and can't even listen to it lol

either way those radio like streaming services aren't my cup of tea. I always end up pushing the next button until I run out of skips lol I prefer spotify where I can pick it myself or can choose from a billion of playlists

Haha. It's not just music or comics. Tech is the same, and within tech, you get Apple Snobs, Android snobs, etc.

Anyone know when iTunes Radio is coming to Ireland? Its been over a year since release now

Canada and the UK are also waiting. Ireland will probably get it when the UK do. I'm now thinking that it'll be when they do whatever they do with Beats. I think Beats will be integrated with the Music app, with iTunes Radio.

Sounds like you'll like Beats being integrated then. Best of all worlds.

Didn't Apple used to make computers ?

Wow. Profound comment. Really contributes to the conversation.... [/sarcasm]

Meanwhile on the Apple AppStore, 'Free MP3 downloader' and 'iTubes' are still in the top 15...

Here's an idea, Apple: if you want to revolutionize the music business, how about you eradicate blatant piracy from your ecosystem?

I have idea Apple how about becoming more like Netflix or Amazon Prime for movies and TV Show, as for music how about more like Spotify and I am not talking about crappy Beats which you want to keep it as a separate service because you are too chicken **** to take over Beats.

If you pay attention to what's rumoured often, a Netflix like service, is something they've been looking into, as part of a new Apple TV or television set, though the fact we haven't seen it yet, means it's stalled. Making such a service isn't simple, there's rights issues, some are exclusive to Amazon, some Netflix, plus these are all different in each country.

As for Music streaming. It's looking like Beats will be integrated with the music app, so you'll get streaming like that.

As for taking over Beats, they already did. They own it...
